The Basics
The San Francisco VA Health System is a multi-faceted organization providing affordable medical care and social services to low-income and homeless veterans in the San Francisco Bay area. It’s owned and operated through the larger US Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition to its primary healthcare services, it also facilitates an outpatient treatment program for opiate abusers struggling with addiction.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, each client goes through an initial intake and assessment to help staff members determine their unique needs. Detox is not offered on-site, but referrals to outside programs can be made. Still, as the program is geared towards participants coming off of opiates like heroin, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is provided in the form of Suboxone, methadone and naltrexone.
In addition to the medication, the program also offers individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices such as CBT and DBT. Group sessions cover a range of topics including relapse prevention, addiction education, anger management and life skills. Dual diagnosis support is available as well. Though participating in 12-step recovery is not strictly required, attending local AA/NA meetings is encouraged.
The staff at San Francisco VA Health System consists of MDs, psychologists, LCSWs, RNs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
The organization provides case management and legal advocacy services. Those who finish a primary care regimen can also continue with therapy at a stepped down rate as a form of aftercare.
