sober living san diego californiaThe Basics

Founded in 1955, San Diego Rescue Mission is an expansive organization dedicated to helping homeless and disenfranchised residents of San Diego, California. With a number of facilities for men and women throughout the city, those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction can take advantage of long-term stays at the mission, which provides a blend of sober living and low-intensity residential treatment.

Accommodations and Amenities

Overall, the San Diego Rescue Mission provides 200 beds for men and 160 for women amongst all of its facilities. The sober living homes are gender-specific with bedrooms set up dorm-style; with bunk beds, dressers and closet space and are generally shared between two to four clients.

Aside from locations specifically geared towards addiction recovery, San Diego Rescue Mission also has 100 beds in an emergency shelter for homeless clients or others in need. This facility has large group rooms with rows of bunk beds and additional blankets and pillows on the floor. It has common areas where clients can relax, an on-site cafeteria area where residents can eat three meals a day, computer labs for job searching and classrooms.

Rules and Regulations

Throughout their stay, residents work through a treatment program in phases, beginning with a stabilization period. Programs lasts for 12 months and use a Christian-based curriculum that includes Bible studies, church on Sundays and 12-step participation. Another major part of the program includes a focus on building life skills through rotating classes covering GED preparation, resume building, money management, keyboarding, anger management and social skills. All clients are expected to submit to regular and random drug tests and remain in good standing with their fellow residents.

As clients proceed through the program they also begin engaging in work therapy, which can take the form of housekeeping around the mission or working in the organization’s thrift store. Residents eventually begin looking for outside employment as well as permanent housing.

Extras

Additional services include a recuperative care unit homeless clients, the Nueva Vida Haven emergency shelter for women and children, which provides daycare, educational services and meals to about 60 women.

San Diego Rescue Mission  also has a transitional housing program that accepts up to 28 women and 20 men. Though not a permanent solution, this program is longer term and designed to teach clients to live independently.

Finally, the organization also has an outpatient clinic staffed with MFTs that provides free counseling to individuals, couples, families and children who are homeless or at-risk.

In Summary

Overall, San Diego Rescue Mission is an incredibly diverse program with an enormous range of services for underprivileged residents of  San Diego. It offers a slew of housing and food-related programs all based on Christian and 12-step principles. While somewhat niche, the San Diego Rescue Mission is an affordable long-term housing and treatment option for those who qualify.
