The Basics
Kansas City may be famous for blues, barbecue and baseball, but in the Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center, founded in 1967, it can also lay claim to the first federally recognized community health center in Missouri and only the fourth of its kind in the nation. Originally located in the Wayne Miner Court housing projects, the facility represents the commitment of its founder, Dr. Samuel Rodgers, to deliver quality healthcare to everyone. In 1983, it began offering substance abuse and addiction treatment to individuals in the Rodgers South building.
Treatment and Staff
After a thorough assessment by a mental health professional, clients are admitted into one of two treatment programs: Intensive Outpatient (IOP) or medication-assisted treatment. With the understanding that clients have varying needs, Samuel Rodgers takes an individualized treatment approach to substance abuse.
Clients have individual therapy once a week and group sessions twice a week. Groups average from 12 to 15 clients and are conducted by the staff LCSW. Rather than following a 12-step treatment model, Rodgers uses evidence-based techniques such as CBT.
For individuals enrolled in the medication-assisted program, a doctor is on staff at all times to assess progress during detox. Suboxone may be used provided a client has been evaluated by a staff physician. Since the Rodgers program is so closely affiliated with the main medical center, medical assistance is close by if needed.
A client’s length of treatment is determined on a case-by-case basis, in conjunction with the case manager and physician.
