British Columbia CanadaThe Basics

Samaritan Inn Recovery Homes is a nonprofit organization located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, just outside Greater Vancouver. Providing faith-based recovery for men over the age of 19, SIRH employs a dual-phase recovery model that combines Christian fundamentals with traditional therapy to help individuals recover from substance abuse.

SIRH was founded by Ernie Mueller in 1990 and receives funding and board direction from local churches. Residential treatment is tailored to support men who have experienced homelessness or who have spent time in the criminal justice system.

Accommodations and Food

SIRH residents are accommodated in two facilities, moving from one stage to the next as they progress in recovery. Both homes are comfortably furnished and homey, the first stage home with 10 beds and the second home with nine. Treatment and housing is under the same roof. Clients sleep two or three per room and share bathrooms.

Each home has a living room with TV for down time during approved viewing hours. Therapeutic activities are also facilitated in the main room. Both homes have a spacious kitchen where clients learn to prepare their own meals that are served family style and prepared in rotating shifts. Coffee, tea and snacks are available throughout the day. Each home also has a spacious outdoor area for exercise and fresh air.

Treatment and Staff

Before enrolling in SIRH, clients must schedule an appointment for an assessment during intake hours from 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. The assessment process also determines the need for detox, medication management and dual diagnosis support. SIRH does not accept individuals who are receiving methadone treatment. The program is faith-based and clients must agree to participate in all treatment elements in order to graduate.

Group therapy is the main method of treatment. Clients attend daily groups to learn relapse prevention skills and to develop deep connections with each other. On Wednesdays, clients attend Celebrate Recovery meetings and the staff incorporate the 12-step principles throughout the treatment process. The men also attend an in-house bible study Friday evenings which is open to the public so clients get to build community support. On Sunday, all residents attend a church service at Hill City Church.

Groups and activities are facilitated by male counselors and is centered on the Christian faith. Three staff counselors including the founder work with clients to develop their spirituality, accountability, communication skills and sense of community. SIRH also believes in making their clients productive members of society. After 90 days, clients are supported as they begin to find jobs, enabling them to contribute to their rent.

Extras

The second phase of treatment is SIRH’s aftercare program. Clients are kept in close contact when they step down to the this phase, and continue their treatment and groups. Aftercare residents are also encouraged to assist new clients in a leadership role.

In Summary

Samaritan Inn Recovery Homes offers structured residential treatment for men that is faith-based and 12-step focused. Clients are introduced to meetings, bible study and church activities and are also assisted in finding employment. SIRH believes that helping clients become responsible and spiritually fit encourages a smooth integration back into the community.
