Located in Annapolis, Maryland, Samaritan House is a state-certified halfway house and has provided transitional care and sober living for men since 1971. This program is designed for those who have exhibited willingness and a desire for an addiction-free lifestyle and are willing to make a long-term commitment.
Accommodations and Amenities
Samaritan House accommodates 16 men in the transitional facility, and nine in the sober living residence. The campus is nestled on eight acres of wooded property that provides a serene ambience. Residents share rooms that are furnished dorm-style with dressers and desks useful for Big Book study.
The theme here is encouraging fellowship, which is evident in the picnic tables, basketball and volleyball courts, garden and library that are on the campus. Samaritan House employs a professional chef. The men enjoy three hot meals per day inside a dining room furnished with long white tables and chairs.
Rules and Regulations
Clients must have completed detox prior to admission. Program length for transitional care is typically six months long. Samaritan House has a part-time career coordinator who assists clients as they look for work. One of the requirements of the program is that the men either seek employment or pursue an academic education. Other weekly requirements include attending three group sessions and one individual therapy session.
Group therapy is held in the evenings, while individual therapy is scheduled around a client’s work or academic schedule. Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills planning and peer support. Clients attend family counseling as needed and work closely with case managers who monitor their progress. Samaritan House utilizes a 12-step approach. While not mandatory, attendance at AA/NA meetings is supported and daily transportation is provided.
Samaritan House employs an 11 pm curfew seven days a week. After a 30-day stay, clients in good standing are eligible for overnight passes. After six months, clients have the option to move to the sober living residence where rules are more lenient. Attending outpatient treatment is not required, however, clients receive peer support and continue their 12-step-based recovery.
Clients are typically qualified for state and county funding resources. Out-of-pocket cost is $600 per month, but self-pay clients are on a four to six week waiting list for a bed.
Samaritan House has a weight room, as they believe that exercise also contributes to helping clients in their recovery.
Samaritan House has worked hard for over 40 years to help men stay clean and sober while rebuilding their lives. Their campus is also an oasis that provides an atmosphere of healing and hope. This is a great alternative to inpatient treatment for a man who is very motivated in recovery and willing to make a minimum six month commitment.
