Ontario CanadaSalvation Army London Centre of Hope Review

The Salvation Army’s London Centre of Hope is a large facility located in London, Ontario. This specific location has been in operation for over 125 years and offers faith-based assistance for individuals from all walks of life.

Conveniently located downtown, LCH has 267 emergency beds for the homeless as well as work placement programs. LCH also offers a residential treatment program for chemical dependency that helps clients through withdrawal symptoms using evidence-based methods and enrolls them in community programs once they are stabilized.

Accommodations and Food

The chemical dependency ward is one hallway in the immense LCH building. With a total of 18 beds available, the ward provides men and women aged 16 and up a safe, sober space to recuperate. Each bedroom accommodates anywhere from one to four residents at a time. Men and women are housed in a co-ed hall but are kept separate between activity times. Bathrooms are shared and basic linens are available for use. Each client also receives a locker to keep personal items safe during their stay.

Every bed also has a hospital tray table for meals which are brought up from the cafeteria so that clients working through severe withdrawal symptoms stay safe and comfortable. Meals are basic American fare and provide essential nutrients so clients feel nourished. Sugar and caffeine are available but limited. There is also a common area in the ward that has a TV for downtime and socialization.

Treatment and Staff

Before admission, all clients must call in for an assessment and to determine if a bed is available. Since the program can go from full to half full within a day, clients are encouraged to check back frequently for availability. An assessment can be taken over the phone so clients can start their program as soon as possible.

Detox services are available but medication management is not provided as there are no physicians or nurses on the ward to assist clients. Clients requiring medical attention are taken to the nearest hospital.

The first three to five days are spent stabilizing and ensuring the client is comfortable. Clients can rest, eat and not feel pressured to attend any therapeutic activities until they feel ready. Once the client is stable, they participate in daily group therapy and 12-step meetings. NA/AA and CA meetings are facilitated on the property and residents are strongly encouraged to get sponsors to fortify their recovery experience and work the steps.

Groups utilize CBT techniques and emphasize relapse prevention skills. Groups are facilitated by LADCs who are qualified to manage withdrawal symptoms.

The LCH program is faith-based and helps clients get placed into similar programs that also offer housing and support following completion of the intensive residential track.

Extras

The Salvation Army’s London Centre of Hope offers housing services and work placement programs. Additionally, spiritual support is given through bible study groups, community meals and summer camps.

In Summary

The Salvation Army’s London Centre of Hope provides residents a free space to safely detox from chemical dependency and begin the recovery process. Clients learn about addiction through on-site groups and 12-step meetings. Credentialed staff members are knowledgeable and readily present for clients needing any type of assistance. The program is faith-based and offers church services and bible studies to support client’s spiritual advancement.
