The Basics
The Saint Regis Mohawk Health Services has served the Akwesasne, New York community for more than 30 years with both outpatient and inpatient treatment programs. Situated on the New York and Canada boarder on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, the tribal territory crosses the Ontario boarder into Quebec. Treatment services are available for both alcohol and chemically dependent members of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. Staff utilizes the 12-step framework as well as evidence-based methods including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
Treatment and Staff
Prospective clients of Saint Regis Mohawk Health Services must be registered members of the Mohawk Native American tribe, providing their Tribal ID, social security card and birth certificate in order to participate in a two-hour assessment. In cases where more intensive residential treatment is needed, clients are typically referred to Saint Regis Mohawk Health Services’ Partridge House.
Those enrolled in the outpatient track attend treatment at least twice a week—once for group therapy and once for an individual session. If the initial evaluation determines a higher level of acuity, clients may be expected to attend more often. Groups cover topics like relapse prevention and co-dependent behavior, Clients are also encouraged to attend outside AA/NA meetings in the community, but are not required to do so.
Staff at the Saint Regis Mohawk Health Services Outpatient Program consists of a number of Licensed Substance Abuse Counselors (LSACs).
Extras
While in treatment, clients develop an aftercare plan to support lasting recovery. Additionally, clients can access services such as drug and alcohol assessments, treatment for compulsive gambling, co-dependency and nicotine dependence. Those requiring support for non-substance abuse related issues will find Saint Regis Mohawk Health Services a comprehensive network of general health, education, financial and social services.
Saint Regis Mohawk Health Services also makes referrals to outside agencies for detox and inpatient programs if the Partridge House is not a good fit. All treatment services are also provided to any family members of clients whose lives have been affected by the substance abuse of their relative or significant other.
