Founded in 2003 by Barb and Pat Madigan in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Saint Paul Spirit House provides sober living for men. Their mission is to provide an atmosphere where men can focus on building a foundation in a 12-step program, learn to be accountable and be part of a fellowship.

Accommodations and Amenities

Saint Paul Spirit House is an antique white split-level house with bright white trim. The home is surrounded by trees, and features attractive potted plants across the front porch. A paved driveway, adjacent to a pristine lawn, leads up to the screened front door. The backyard is on a hill, and includes an abundance of trees, small pathways paved by rocks, patio chairs, hanging lanterns and more potted plants.

Saint Paul Spirit House accommodates between eight and ten men, who are paired in double-occupancy furnished rooms. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV and a laundry room. A house manager lives on the premises and oversees operations. Residents are responsible for their own groceries and food is prepared in a fully equipped kitchen. The house is within walking distance to restaurants, shopping and one block away from the bus top. Downtown Saint Paul is five minutes away.

Rules and Regulations

Priority is given to new clients have completed a program at a residential treatment facility, but the men are accepted on a case-by-case basis. All must have undergone detox, if necessary, and express a willingness to incorporate a 12-step program into their lives. A four-month minimum length of stay is mandatory.

Requirements for residents include attending a minimum of two weekly 12-step meetings, getting a sponsor and meeting with that person at least once per week. Other rules include participating in the on-site Sunday night speaker meeting at six pm, which features different local speakers who come to the house and share their experience, strength and hope. After the meeting ends, residents must attend the mandatory house meeting.

Clients must also work, attend school or perform community service for a minimum of 30 hours weekly. Additionally, they must perform household chores and be part of the local fellowship, which includes finding a home group and having a service commitment. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse are removed from the premises to ensure the safety of the entire household.

Saint Paul Spirit House features a cozy 12-step meeting room, which includes a podium, for the Sunday night speaker meeting, which is open to the community. The house also holds many social events, including an annual picnic at the house, which features food, live music, a local speaker and fellowship.

Saint Paul Spirit House is a member of the Minnesota Association of Sober Housing (MASH), which demands high standards from its affiliates.
