Saginaw Odyssey House Review

Saginaw Odyssey House operates a comprehensive long-term residential substance abuse treatment program for women in Saginaw, Michigan. The facility has space for 30 women, with priority given to pregnant women and women with children.

Accommodations and Food

Saginaw’s two-story brick building provides a homey environment for clients during recovery. Some bedrooms come equipped with two twin-sized beds, a desk and plenty of closet space, while those for new mothers have a single bed and a crib. The house has wooden floors and walls painted in soothing colors. The kitchen is equipped with an electric stove, microwave and refrigerator, with pots, pans and utensils included.

Residents are required to prepare their own food, but all grocery fees are included in the rent. Typically, women work together to prepare meals or take turns dividing up kitchen duties. There is also a certified daycare facility on-site with plenty of activities for children to stay busy while mothers attend therapy sessions. The daycare is free of charge.

Treatment and Staff

All women admitted to Saginaw Odyssey House are provided specialized services funded with federal and state money. All treatment is tailored toward women’s needs, including groups that address topics such as domestic violence and sexual trauma. Pregnant women, women with children up to age 18 and women who are on Medicaid have priority for admission.

All residents must commit to a stay of at least three months. The program requires clients to attend individual, group and family therapy sessions on a weekly basis. Each family is assigned a case manager who uses traditional talk therapy methods while also providing family education. Residents are not required to work the 12 steps, though referrals to local meetings can be made upon request.

After completing the residential program, women are offered referrals to the Flint Odyssey House outpatient program. This track helps clients with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders through a structured program that requires attendance at a minimum of three one-hour individual therapy sessions a week.

Other services include classes on parenting skills, vocational management and anger management, as well as trauma groups and substance abuse education. Dance, yoga and meditation classes are available.

Extras

In addition to treatment, Saginaw Odyssey House offers recreational activities, which include daily calisthenics and social outings like bowling and movie night.

In Summary

Saginaw Odyssey House is a solid substance abuse program for women with financial difficulties in need of shelter and support. The residence caters to pregnant women and women with children, with a licensed daycare that is essential for new parents in recovery.  Saginaw Odyssey House is an affordable recovery option for women struggling with addiction.
