The Basics
Safe Refuge of Long Beach, California provides comprehensive outpatient substance abuse treatment and services. These include individual and group threrapy, as well as specialized care for those with co-occurring disorders. Safe Refuge is a CARF Accredited facility offering programs to adolescents and adults since 1988.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient treatments offered at Safe Refuge differ in intensity depending on the needs of the individual, or if the client was referred by the court system or not. After getting assessed, some enter into the intensive day treatment, which is a five to eight hour program that meets five days a week. There is also an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which typically meets three times a week for three to five hours. The least intensive program, which could also be considered aftercare, is a relapse prevention track that is once a week for about three hours. The facility has group and individual therapy sessions throughout the day into the evening, and even on weekends, which is helpful for clients who are working or in school, and offers flexibility in their treatment.
The therapy methods are individualized and evidence-based, including the 12 steps and CBT. Group therapy sessions cover a variety of topics like anger management, life and coping skills and vocational training. The adolescent programs address self-esteem issues and making healthy choices. For clients who are required to attend treatment through the court system, there are parenting programs that last anywhere from three months to a year weekly and a domestic violence program. Both of these specialty groups fulfill the state requirement in hours.
Safe Refuge small staff includes a LMFT, case managers, LPCs and also depends the generosity of their volunteers.
Extras
Job training is available for those in need, including low income or homeless clients and their families.
Safe Refuge provides specialty-counseling services for veterans, LGBT community, couples and family members. Transitional housing is available to some clients while participating in the outpatient programs. Clients who complete the initial programs are eligible for aftercare for up to one year.

Since it’s inception over 26 years ago, Safe Refuge has provided over 20,000 clients with an encouraging and healing environment with an approach that is referred as “the open arm approach” meaning that no matter what, no one is discriminated against while trying to find a safe and supportive place while working on sobriety.
