The Basics
Safe Passage Recovery is an organization dedicated to the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring behavioral health issues. Located in San Rafael, California, Safe Passage offers a spectrum recovery services for men and women. These include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), a family recovery program and an upscale sober living home.
Treatment and Staff
The IOP usually lasts 90 days. Clients attend three hours of group therapy three times a week and one weekly individual session. Regular attendance at AA/NA meetings is also required. The program utilizes the Identity Transformation Model (ITM) developed by Bridgette Lank PhD, a licensed psychologist and chief clinical consultant for Safe Passage. The ITM employs a biopsychosocial approach, which attributes addiction to biological (genetics), psychological (mood, personality, behavior) and social (cultural, familial, economic) factors. There are groups specifically dedicated to trauma-informed care and co-occurring disorders, which can include medication management if needed. Therapy methods include psychoeducation, CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and holistic approaches like meditation, yoga and nutritional counseling.
In addition to Dr. Lank, the staff is made up of Master’s-level therapists and support staff, including two MFTs and holistic health coach.
Extras
Safe Passage Recovery also offers a free family program for loved ones (18 years and older) that includes a two-part intensive occurring at week six and week 12 within the 90-day IOP.
For those in need of structured living to further support their recovery, Safe Passage operates a sober living home called Golden Gate House in nearby Tiburon, California. The luxurious co-ed home has space for a total of 11 residents. The home features three private bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and four gender-specific double rooms, each with its own bath and a walk-in closet. The home also has two full kitchens, washers and dryers, an herb garden, a hot tub and a rooftop terrace that boasts a view of the San Francisco Bay. While there is an on-site house manager on hand, residents build life skills by shopping for groceries and preparing their own meals.
