Safe Haven Review
Safe Haven is a substance abuse treatment center for adults in Marikina City, Philippines. Marikina is located on the island of Luzon and is one of the cities that make up the Metro Manila area. Clients are provided with various options for care including residential treatment, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and aftercare. Programming incorporates the 12 steps, Christian spiritual principles and the therapeutic community approach.
Accommodations and Food
Safe Haven is a two-story clinical facility where residents live in gender-specific dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds. There are two bedrooms for men that accommodate up to 12 clients and one bedroom with space for six women. Each dorm has an attached bathroom with shower stalls, sinks and toilets. There is also a lounge area with a TV and board games.
A chef prepares three meals a day and the menu consists of a variety of Eastern and Western dishes. Most dietary restrictions and requests can be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
Upon arrival, each client is assessed to determine a proper level of care. Detox is offered on-site if necessary and medical supervision is provided. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is available for those experiencing painful withdrawal symptoms from opiates and alcohol. Upon admission, residents are given a primary therapist who helps them develop an individualized treatment plan. Each new client is also assigned a current resident as a designated companion to help them settle in to the program during the first week.
Safe Haven offers a 90-day residential program that consists of daily CBT-based group sessions, on-site 12-step meetings, educational videos and lectures. Each client meets with his or her primary therapist for individual therapy at least once a week. For graduates of the program, or those who do not require 24-hour care, Safe Haven also offers a 90-day IOP that meets five days a week for two hours at a time. Typically, clients slowly step down to fewer sessions as they progress.
The Safe Haven staff consists of doctors, nurses, a certified psychologist and volunteer peer counselors who are graduates of the program. An on-staff psychiatrist assists clients in need of dual diagnosis support. Several of the counselors speak English and the facility prides itself in catering to clients from all around the world.
Extras
Safe Haven has an aftercare program for clients who have completed its inpatient or outpatient program. The program focuses on relapse prevention in a group setting once a week for an hour at a time. These services are available at no extra charge for up to a year.
