The Basics
Founded in 2003, SAFE Foundation, Inc. is an outpatient substance treatment center for adults and adolescents in Brooklyn, New York. SAFE Foundation promotes the growth of its clients through the 12 steps, individual therapy, group therapy and a family program. Highly-trained trained staff members educate clients and their loved ones about the disease of addiction and its impact on individuals and their the family units.
Treatment and Staff
Outpatient treatment at SAFE Foundation begins with an interview process for clients. Counselors determine if clients should move forward to outpatient treatment, where they will receive psychiatric evaluations and individualized treatment plans. Those who need medical detox receive referrals for facilities nearby, as SAFE does not offer detox services. However, there is an in-house medical doctor at the facility, who oversees Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), prescribing buprenorphine for opiate withdrawal.
Treatment is highly individualized and includes a combination of group and individual therapy sessions specific to each client. Depending on the individual’s history, some undergo medical monitoring and drug screenings throughout the course of treatment. SAFE Foundation’s specialized group therapy options include gender-specific groups, gender-specific relapse prevention programs, couples counseling, family therapy and alumni groups. Clients are also required to attend off-site 12-step meetings as part of their treatment.
SAFE’s philosophy is that addiction is a disease and a family issue, like any other disease. Family involvement is built into the treatment plan as much as possible. This is so the client can get family support, understand addiction’s repercussions and also to see the familial connection to the disease’s origin.
The staff at Safe Foundation includes credentialed addiction counselors and Master’s-level, licensed mental health professionals.
Extras
Project SAFE, also founded in 2003, is a program designed to educate young people on ways to better themselves without the use of addictive substances or behaviors. Safe & Sound Training Institute is another offshoot of SAFE Foundation. It offers mental health professionals, social workers and students addiction education through webcasts and seminars.
Treatment for gambling addiction is also available at SAFE. The gambling program requires an assessment and formulation of individualized treatment. Clients undergo a psychiatric evaluation and then work with a certified gambling addiction counselor to determine the course of treatment. services available for gambling addiction are family therapy, couples counseling and group counseling.
