Rutgers University Behavioral Health CareThe Basics

Adult and adolescent addiction services are available through Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (more commonly referred to as, UBHC). The facility is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey and provides an array of resources for individuals with mental health difficulties. Substance abuse treatment is offered in the form of a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient. Specialized programs for co-occurring disorders as well as community resource programs and transportation assistance are also provided.

Treatment and Staff

UBHC acts as home to the Specialized Addiction Treatment Services (SATS) program. The program offers comprehensive services including dual diagnosis support and support for special needs such as physical disabilities, developmental disabilities and trauma. Prior to being enrolled in the program, all clients must be assessed to determine their needs and the acuity of their chemical dependency. A bio-psycho-social assessment is utilized to identify these needs prior to beginning treatment.

Depending on the outcome of the assessment, the client is placed in a PHP, IOP or standard outpatient program. All programs utilize an evidence-based treatment approach and may recommend 12-step meetings for some clients. The PHP track is the most intensive, meeting for six hours a minimum of three days per week. The IOP track holds groups three to four days per week for three hours each session. The standard outpatient program meets one to two times per week for three hours each session. Clients attend group therapy, individual therapy and family counseling. Each client can take advantage of an individualized treatment program and a treatment team that is managing their case. A special women’s program is also available for female clients to feel more comfortable in the IOP track.

As previously mentioned, dual diagnosis support is available for clients that require additional assistance and medication management. The standard outpatient program is designed for individuals that need only minimal support. The IOP program is designed for clients that primarily struggle with chemical dependency and secondary mental disorders. The PHP track is designed for individuals that require the most supervision, and have primarily mental disorders with secondary chemical dependency.

Clients are seen by a team of psychiatrists and Master’s-level clinicians that work diligently to stabilize their clients. All clinicians have additional certifications to work with chemical dependency.

Extras

Special resources are available for clients that need additional care. Transportation services are available. If clients have completed primary treatment, they may be recommended to attend aftercare services. Aftercare consists of attending group therapy that focuses on relapse prevention and continuing life skills. Family programs are also available to help educate families on addiction.

In Summary

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care provides programming for adults and adolescents to work toward their recovery from chemical dependency. Through multiple program formats, clients can have an individualized experience and comprehensive care. The facility is available during the week only, with hours in the evening and daytime to accommodate schedules. All services are provided by Master’s-level clinicians.
