Rural Women's Recovery ProgramRural Women’s Recovery Program Review

Rural Women’s Recovery Program was founded in 1975 in the southeastern Ohio community of Athens. It is a part of Health Recovery Services, an Athens-based substance abuse treatment organization. The CARF-accredited facility provides residential treatment to adult women with children in the Athens area.

Accommodations and Food

The residence is a large log cabin surrounded by lush greenery. The house holds up to 16 women and, if applicable, any of their children under the age of five. There are a total of four bedrooms with two bunk beds in each room. Children sleep in the same bedroom as their mothers. Residents share bathrooms but have their own private closet and bedside table. There is large living room with comfy couches for communal use. Additionally, the house has a basement with a treadmill and cycle machine. When the weather permits, clients go on walks in the surrounding area.

The house has a large kitchen and dining room where an on-site chef prepares three meals a day, Mondays through Fridays. The chef can accommodate dietary restrictions and requests. Clients are responsible for their own meal preparation on the weekends with staff-provided groceries and food. Fruit and snacks are always available in the kitchen between meals, but sugar and caffeine are strictly prohibited inside the house.

Treatment and Staff

The admission process at Rural Women’s Recovery Program begins with an in-person meeting with an intake coordinator. This meeting lasts roughly 45 minutes and the coordinator aims to determine the client’s level of need. Those who are deemed a good fit for the program are then placed on the house’s waiting list, which can last from one to four weeks. Clients who are unstable or going through withdrawal are referred to outside detox programs.

The residential program lasts for four months and consists of intensive group and individual therapy. Counselors aim to take a holistic approach incorporating body, mind and spirit into treatment. Clients generally meet for two group meetings a day and cover a variety of topics including gender-specific issues, family co-dependency, trauma, education and the 12 steps. Counselors also use a variety of treatment techniques including CBT and relapse prevention. Every woman in the house also has the option of beginning each day with a guided meditation. Individual meetings are scheduled on a case by case basis.

The house regularly hosts weekly AA/NA meetings that clients are encouraged but not required to attend.

Rural Women’s Recovery Program is dual diagnosis equipped and clients with potential co-occurring disorders meet with the organization’s mental health staff and on-site psychologist. There is also an on-site medical staff with nurses and a doctor to address any potential medical or physical issues. The facility has a large staff of over 50 people including a counseling staff that consists of LPCs and LADCs.

Extras

When clients leave the program they are offered the opportunity for aftercare. In the aftercare program, clients continue individual meetings with the counselor and step down into a local Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or transitional care program.

If clients do not yet have their GEDs, Rural Women’s Recovery Program also offers educational services to help them get on track to receive their GED while in the program or shortly after they leave.

In Summary

Rural Women’s Recovery Program offers a comprehensive and intensive residential treatment program for adult women in the Athens area. The large staff provides a high level of individualized attention for each client. By allowing small children to attend as well, this program not only helps mothers get sober but also allows them to address any family issues they might be encountering in early recovery. Also, the on-site 12-step meetings help introduce clients to the concept of community support groups while still in the safe confines of formal treatment.
