The Basics
Rubicon, Inc. is the oldest and most expansive substance abuse treatment program in the state of Virginia. The facility was originally part of the Richmond Community Action Program and over time has been contracted through the Department of Corrections and Community Service Boards throughout Virginia to provide recovery for adults struggling with addiction. Founded in 1970, Rubicon provides an array of programs including detox, general outpatient treatment and aftercare. All program modalities are individualized to ensure a unique treatment experience for each client. Programs are designed for adults who do not require residential or intensive treatment or close supervision to maintain sobriety.
Treatment and Staff
Rubicon’s outpatient care is tailored for each client’s unique needs. Before being admitted, the potential client must schedule an appointment with an intake coordinator for a bio-psycho-social assessment which is essential to ensuring the correct intensity of treatment. Programs are designed to be non-restrictive but structured enough to ensure positive growth and behavior modification.
Depending on the client, therapeutic activities are generally attended once to three times per week, with frequency based on the acuity of chemical dependence and the client’s schedule. The majority of treatment is group therapy which uses psycho-education and focuses on subjects including relapse prevention and specialty gender-specific groups as well as vocational skills and meditation. Individual therapy and family counseling sessions are also available weekly or as-needed.
Therapy and other activities are facilitated by CSACs, LPCs, psychologists and a nutritionist. The clinical staff may also provide referrals to outside community resources if needed. The psychologist on staff also provides dual diagnosis support for clients with additional mental health concerns. Clients are also required to attend 12-step meetings in the surrounding community. Clients must stay abstinent during their treatment and are regularly drug tested and given alcohol screenings.
Extras
Rubicon ensures that alumni of all programs stay connected and lend their experience to new clients in recovery. Through an alumni program, meetings are held as aftercare. The alumni are a part of community outreach, special events and may speak at group meetings.
In Summary
The outpatient program at Rubicon offers flexible treatment accommodating each individual’s life obligations and schedules while providing structure for growth and change. Through individual, group and family therapy as well as alumni support, clients are given an affordable opportunity for recovery.
