The Basics
Rubicon Family Counseling Services is a mental health treatment facility that specializes in substance abuse in Hartsville—the largest city in Darlington County (also known as the Pee Dee region) South Carolina. Adults, adolescents and children are treated with outpatient care. The facility is a non-profit organization that also hosts regular events to fund treatment for those facing financial hardship allowing or affordable treatment for all.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment options at RFCS include both standard outpatient and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Enrollment in one of the two programs is determined by the result of a bio-psycho-social assessment given at intake which reviews each client’s history with chemical dependency, contributing factors via family dynamics and the client’s assets and resources. Clients who require dual diagnosis support are assessed further for co-occurring disorders as well as any need for medication management. Clients requiring additional care and support not provided by RFCS are referred to a trusted local resource for services.
Both the standard outpatient and IOP tracks utilize a variety of therapeutic activities including group therapy which allows clients to work in a peer-supportive setting with a CADC to problem solve and learn new coping skills. Group topics include early intervention, relapse prevention, anger management and psycho-education and gender-specific groups are available for women. Clients also attend individual therapy with their primary counselor to solidify topics covered during groups and to identify more private concerns. Counselors utilize evidence-based practices to assist clients through therapy.
There is also a women’s IOP called “Women Helping Women” wherein women work on cultivating confidence, self-reliance, identifying strengths and independence. The adolescent program is mostly educational and addresses the unique needs of young people between the ages of 12 and 18 with group topics similar to the adult track. Parents and families are encouraged to participate.
Standard outpatient clients come to the facility once per week while IOP clients attend activities two to three days per week. Clients may also take advantage of family therapy to promote recovery in the family unit. Individuals and their families may schedule sessions when needed to work on problem resolution and communication skills. Overall, clients are overseen by their case manager to ensure that therapeutic activities, healthcare needs and community resources are provided. Clients are also encouraged to attend community 12-step meetings to supplement their recovery experience at RFCS.
Extras
Clients who complete treatment at RFCS may enroll in an aftercare program through the Continuing Care Group. In addition to group therapy and occasional individual sessions, clients participate in equine therapy at a nearby facility. This alternative treatment with horses promotes trust, communication and teamwork through a recovery frame.
Additionally, there are a range of community programs offered including a parenting program called the “Positive Parenting Program”. Clients work on identifying and rewarding positive behaviors in their children, parenting with confidence and finding support from the broader community. A DUI program is available as well, as are marital and couple’s counseling services, smoking cessation, bullying awareness and employment assistance.
