Birmingham AlabamaRoyal Pines Center Review

The Jimmie Hale Mission began in 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama as a storefront chapel and over the years has expanded to six locations, including the Royal Pines Center for men, which is a residential substance abuse treatment facility in Hayden. This program offers adult men faith-based and 12-step philosophy treatment, group and individual therapy in a supportive and spiritual environment.

Accommodations and Food

Royal Pines is a large, one-story brick home that sits on over 70 acres of land about 30 miles north of Birmingham in Hayden, Alabama. This facility can accommodate up to 24 men in shared bedrooms furnished with twin beds, dressers, closet space and connecting bathrooms. The facility is very spacious and includes a large kitchen, living rooms with televisions and dining room with several long tables and benches.

There is an on site rec room with foosball and ping pong tables, a basketball court and weight room that the clients can enjoy after the initial 30 days in treatment. The sprawling landscape allows for exercise, like jogging, and softball tournaments amongst the residents. The food is prepared by cooks at the facility and served cafeteria-style. There are many options daily, and snacks are readily available throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

The programs at Royal Pines can last anywhere from 16 weeks to a year and the treatment is strongly rooted in the Bible and Christian values. The clients participate in daily 12-step meetings, Bible study, and psychoeducation and are assigned jobs, like landscaping duties or working at one of the missions thrift shops, near and on the premises of the facility. There are frequent individual therapy sessions offered as well, especially during the initial phase of treatment.

During the first 30 days the men get used to the schedule of the facility and acclimate to their new digs. This stage prohibits the clients from a few things, like participating in recreational activities and visitors, but once the first step is completed, there are weekly visitation and phone privileges open up more. The therapy offered is CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), and incorporating relapse prevention and coping skills classes. There are also education and work training classes that take place at the facility known as the Stewart Learning Centers. This includes helping client get their GED, resume building and interviewing skills and a literacy program. This program is not only available to clients of the program, but open to the public as well.

The staff at Royal Pines consists of Master’s-level therapists, and many former clients of the program. This includes LCSWs, LCDCs and LPCs in addition to the residential staff and volunteers.

In Summary

For over 70 years the Jimmie Hale Mission has given new lives to those who are struggling with addiction, or simply having a hard time providing for themselves and families. This is an organization that operates with the greater good in mind and survives on the kindness of others, which is incorporated into treatment and the daily operations at Royal Pines.
