An institution since 1984, Roxbury Treatment Center is an inpatient behavioral health facility located in Shippensburg, a central Pennsylvania college town. Since its inception it has specialized in residential substance abuse treatment for adults, and has expanded to include psychiatric treatment programs for adults and adolescents, a program for veterans and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). While all of these are distinct offerings, all are hosted at the same facility.
Accommodations and Food
Roxbury Treatment Center houses clients on a large campus in a non-residential part of Shippensburg. Residents attending the substance abuse program stay in dorm-style housing with three to four to a room. The male and female wings each share three bathrooms, and there are no more than 60 clients attending at any one time. Residents can expect their own twin bed, desk and dresser in their room, and those attending the psychiatric program stay in a locked-down unit in the main building.
A cooking staff on-site prepares three meals a day, keeping healthy options in mind and accommodating dietary restrictions upon request. Roxbury Treatment Center also works to accommodate those with food allergies. Meals are served every day at 8 am, noon and 5 pm, and each program eats separately.
Though it’s not a formal hospital, Roxbury Treatment Center is certified as one, and as such offers an on-site medical detox. During detox, residents can expect to have 24/7 nursing oversight and to share a room (with a private bathroom attached) with at most two other clients. There is a medical doctor on staff who handles initial evaluations after detox, but he does not make regular visits to the program. A psychiatrist on staff is available around the clock for dual diagnosis support and handles medication management.
After the detox process, which typically lasts three to seven days, clients begin a daily schedule of group and individual therapy that lasts between 14 and 28 days. While residents are able to have individual sessions with licensed counselors, group sessions and lectures make up the majority of the Roxbury Treatment Center experience. These sessions introduce clients to the 12-step philosophy, and AA and NA meetings take place every night at the facility. Roxbury Treatment Center also features group sessions dedicated to co-occurring disorders and offers discharge planning that includes appointments with mental health and substance abuse providers.
In addition to art and music therapy, there are also recreational opportunities available to clients throughout the day, including physical therapy every morning and yoga several times a week. Basketball and volleyball courts are on the premises.
Roxbury Treatment Center offers a substance abuse family education program on select Saturdays each month from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. These sessions are an opportunity for families to learn more about addiction and co-occurring mental illness, as well as how to be supportive to loved ones in treatment. Clients are not present at these groups.
With several distinct programs, a medical detox wing and a dual diagnosis inpatient program, Roxbury Treatment Center clearly has resources. Residents can expect days of group sessions, an introduction to the 12-step philosophy and access to a staff psychiatrist. For those seeking an intensive program that addresses co-occurring disorders, it may be a good fit.
