Rosebud Sioux Tribe is based in South Dakota with lands stretching across the Rosebud Indian Reservation and all of Todd County. Established in 1889, the reservation provides both land and services for the Sicangu Oyate and Lakota tribal community, including chemical dependency services at both outpatient and inpatient levels of care, with dual diagnosis support for those struggling with mental health diagnoses. The primary focus of treatment in the RST reservation is for alcohol and crystal methamphetamine abuse.
Accommodations and Food
RST’s chemical dependency facility accommodates residents in a dormitory-style home with both men and women living in the same building on opposite sides of the residence. The 30-day alcohol program provides 16 beds in total, with eight reserved for men and eight for women. The nine-month crystal meth program has 24 beds with 12 reserved for each gender.
Each room is double-occupancy and furnished with two twin beds and an en suite bathroom with a shower. Depending on occupancy, occasionally clients may have their own bedroom for a period of time.
The grounds are an open area with ample space recreation, and a separate seating area for socializing. Meals are served in a cafeteria-like setting, with most meals a combination of comfort and healthy options. Those with dietary restrictions are accommodated. Snacks, coffee and tea are served throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
Clients are enrolled in one of two substance abuse recovery programs: a 30-day program for alcohol addiction and a nine-month program for crystal meth, specifically designed to meet a growing demand on tribal lands. Services are designed for adults over the age of 18, and are reserved for registered tribal members. Treatment is culturally sensitive and incorporates Native American spiritual teachings and cultural aspects.
Prior to being enrolled in either program, clients are assessed by the intake staff. The assessment will determine if a client has co-occurring disorders and any needs for medication.
Once enrolled, all clients attend group and individual therapy, working their way towards a better knowledge of themselves, addiction and their cultural identity. Dual diagnosis support is available through medication management and specialty treatment with a psychiatrist.
Treatment combines Native American traditions with evidence-based practices. Clients typically attend sweat lodge sessions and receive visits from medicine men and spiritual practitioners. Both 12-step and White Bison meetings are hosted on-site.
Days are busy with therapeutic activities and involvement with Tribal affairs. CADCs as well as CCSWs help to facilitate groups and individual sessions.
Extras
At the headquarters in Rosebud, clients can receive medical treatment, job placement assistance and attendance of Tribal events.
Additional services include DUI/DWI offender groups and services for clients in the criminal justice system. Clients that are hearing impaired or prefer the Lakota language are given assistance.
If clients would like to continue their treatment process, the outpatient program acts as a suitable aftercare option for many clients, meeting twice per month on Fridays.
