the-rosebrierSunspire Health: The Rosebriar Review

The Rosebriar is a residential treatment program for women in Astoria, Oregon—a scenic small town at the mouth of the Columbia River, in the the northwest corner of the state. The Rosebriar opened its doors over 15 years ago and has since joined the more expansive Sunspire Health network. It offers holistic, evidence-based treatment in a well-appointed private residence.

Accommodations and Food

Set among lofty green trees, the facility is a former bed and breakfast in the form of an impeccably decorated old Victorian mansion. The house has eight bedrooms furnished with twin beds and tasteful decorations, each of which houses two clients at a time for a total of 16 residents. Though none of them private, the home’s eight bathrooms make it likely that clients will not have to share this space too often.

The residence features common rooms for TV and games and well-kept gardens for relaxing and congregating. All of Rosebriar’s therapeutic activities occur on-site. A kitchen staff prepares three meals a day and snacks; all allergies and preferences can be taken into account.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients in need of detox can do so at Astoria Pointe, home to one of Sunspire Health’s all-male residential programs. The co-ed detox is a two-room, four-bed wing of the facility and offers 24-hour nursing care. Clients stay for three to 10 days and almost always have their own room; however, occasionally they may have to share with one other roommate.

The Rosebriar core residential treatment plan is a combination of group and individual therapy12-step integration and educational sessions. Therapists employs evidence-based practices, such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as holistic options such as art therapy, yoga, Qi-Gong, meditation, equine therapy, massage and acupuncture.

Residents begin their day with meditation time followed by process and education groups that cover interpersonal skills, coping mechanisms, shame reduction, grief and loss, spirituality, relapse prevention, self-esteem work, co-dependency, relationship issues and healthy boundaries, life skills and anger management. Psychoeducation classes are also offered. Though scheduled on an as-needed basis, clients can expect at least two individual session a week. In the evening, residents attend 12-step meetings on-site or are transported to meetings in the community.

Treatment can last as long as 90 days, though an average stay is typically 45.  Rosebriar does have a dual diagnosis component, however, those with more serious mental health issues can be referred to the local psychiatric hospital for additional support.

The Rosebriar has two medical doctors on staff who alternate each week. Typically they are available on the premises for five hours each day, seven days a week. There is also a psychiatrist on staff, who makes a morning visit to the facility once every two weeks. The regular treatment team is comprised of Master’s-level therapists including MFTs and CADCs.

Extras

For exercise, clients are transported to a nearby gym several times a week and on weekends they participate in local excursions such as museum and shopping trips.

The Rosebriar believes in family participation and offers a family program that consists of one-on-one sessions for family members with a therapist. For those who cannot participate in these sessions in person, Rosebriar’s therapists also conduct phone conferences.

After treatment is complete, residents can step down to a 10-week aftercare program in the form of outpatient care at the same facility.

In Summary

With a mixture of evidence-based practices, holistic treatment options and traditional 12-step principles, The Rosebriar provides top-notch residential treatment to women in a private, intimate atmosphere. Its diverse program offers sufficient opportunities to individualize the experience of early recovery. With the help of its knowledgeable staff, graduates of The Rosebriar’s residential track can seamlessly transition to a solid aftercare program while also getting assistance with securing sober living arrangements. With an added bonus of medical detox within the Sunspire Health network, clients of The Rosebriar leave treatment the tools for long-term success in recovery.
