Rolling HillsThe Basics

With locations in Dallas and Garland, Texas Rolling Hills Recovery offers sober living homes for men that focus on implementing the 12-steps in addiction  recovery. Clients are in close proximity to the Greater Dallas metropolitan, an area brimming with 12-step meetings, job opportunities, shopping and public transportation.

Accommodations and Amenities

Each residence accommodates between seven and eight men in both double and single-occupancy bedrooms. At the Edgemont House in Garland, the furniture is simple yet eclectic, and the rooms have parquet floors. The original Rolling Hills home in Dallas has more of a Southwestern feel. While the Edgemont house has a minimalist vibe, Rolling Hills is more family-style and comfortable.

Amenities include laundry facilities, bedding, cable TV, a computer with Internet access, cooking utensils, kitchen towels, paper supplies and laundry detergent. The fully equipped kitchens feature granite countertops and plenty of cabinet space. The Rolling Hills house includes a spacious backyard, along with a covered patio that has exercise equipment. Smoking is permitted in assigned areas in the backyards. At both Rolling Hills Recovery homes, clients purchase their own food and prepare their own meals. Each residence features a live-in manager who provides tips on nutrition, budgeting money and goal setting.

Rules and Regulations

Residents must be clean and sober prior to admission. During the first 30 days, they are expected to attend daily 12-step meetings. After that time, they must attend a minimum of three weekly recovery meetings. Other requirements include securing a job within two week’s of admission, performing weekly chores (unless already employed), maintaining rooms on a daily basis and attending in-house meetings. Clients are allowed to bring a vehicle, laptop computer, razors, personal hygiene items, reading material, casual clothing and any prescribed medications. All medications are taken under supervision of the house manager, at a designated time. Forbidden items include products containing alcohol, candles, pornography, posters, paintings and too many personal belongings.

During the first 30 days, curfew is 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight Fridays and Saturdays. After that time, curfew is 1 am seven days a week, unless other arrangements are made with the house manager. At Rolling Hills Recovery, clients are immediately evicted if suspected of being under the influence or if they have tested positive on a drug or alcohol screening.

The laundry facilities are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Clients are not allowed to leave their laundry in the washing machine or dryer. A quiet time is imposed during the week, which is from 10 pm to 9 am Sundays through Thursdays, and from 11 pm to 9 am Fridays through Saturdays. During quiet time, clients are not allowed to have visitors, begin meal preparation or use the laundry room. During this time, meditation or reading 12-step literature is highly encouraged.

Extras

Move-in requires first and last month’s rent, along with a refundable security deposit of $150.

In Summary

Rolling Hills Recovery offers newly clean and sober men a chance to work the 12-steps in their recovery. For some clients however, that might not be enough. Those seeking more structure or comprehensive services, including medication-assisted treatment might not fare too well here. However, Rolling Hills Recovery is a great option for those who have completed inpatient treatment and are looking for a decent sober living home.
