The Basics
Based out of California’s Silicon Valley, Roland Williams is an addiction treatment professional with a wide range of certifications and available services. As a Master’s-level counselor with LAADC, NCACII, CADCII, ACRPS and SAP certifications, Williams works as a counselor, author, consultant and interventionist. His focus is on addiction and his experience and training allow him to also work with clients suffering from co-occurring disorders. Williams operates independently but maintains close relationships with a number of universities and treatment facilities.
The Background
Williams became interested in the recovery industry after getting sober and turning his own life around, an experience which informs his treatment and helps him connect with his clients. Now in business since 1986, Williams has worked with a number of high-profile institutions to raise awareness about addiction. He helped found and design the curricula for various treatment facilities including Bayside Marin, Alta Mira and DARA. He also teaches addiction studies courses at campuses of University of California, California State University, the University of Texas, the University of Utah, San Jose State University and JFK University.
The Approach
What sets Williams apart from others in his field is his extensive experience in designing recovery programs that work; approaches, curriculum and philosophies that have helped streamline treatment organizations. He also works with a wide range of clients—from celebrities to the inner-city and other marginalized populations. Williams’ approach is less surprise-oriented and more hands-on interventional, with comprehensive and deliberate involvement for those who seek his services. Though detox is not available directly through Williams’ consulting company, clients can be referred to a program if that is a necessary as part of their treatment.
Since every client is different, all treatment plans are individualized and the amount of preparation time for each intervention varies. Williams is trained in a number of evidence-based practices such as CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Gorski Relapse Prevention Therapy, however he also encourages 12-step participation as well. All interventions have the goal of the client seeking further treatment and referrals to an appropriate program will be made.
Post Intervention and Summary
Williams’ involvement is generally limited to the initial goal developed with the client, which may include aftercare and/or check-ins after the initial intervention and treatment is complete. Since addiction is very much a family disease, family and close friends may also be encouraged to attend treatment and support groups. In all, Roland Williams is a caring, hands-on, experienced treatment provider who can help clients with a wide range of recovery needs.
