The Basics

Just a two-hour drive south of Denver is the Royal Gorge region of Colorado, mostly known for housing nine state prisons and four federal penitentiaries. Opened in 1976, Rocky Mountain Behavioral Health serves the community of Cañon City.

Operating as a nonprofit agency, RMBH offers outpatient recovery services to individuals and families with substance abuse issues, dual diagnosis, DUI/DWI offenders and domestic complications. Due to their close proximity to so many prisons and penitentiaries, RMBH works closely with the courts of Fremont County to provide services to a wide variety of clients.

Treatment and Staff

RMBH provides substance abuse treatment with an evidence-based approach, primarily using group therapy. With an average of 12 clients per group, individuals are introduced to CBT approaches to identify root causes of their behaviors. Clients also receive individual therapy, helping with problem solving and developing coping skills. Family programs are provided as well, with counselors working with children as young as three to create a healthier and more stable family environment.

Length of treatment varies, depending upon client needs and whether they are admitted through the court system to attend the program for a specific amount of time.

If enrolled in the DUI program, clients attend a class once per week to fulfill court-ordered treatment requirements. While there is not a specific dual diagnosis program, all treatment staff are certified to work with a diverse array of mild-to-moderate mental disorders.

Clients who are enrolled in the HOPE Program—a Monday-through-Friday treatment module—attend four hours of recovery-focused activities each day. HOPE is a holistic approach to treatment and includes therapy for children affected by a parent’s substance abuse. Groups are conducted by a CADC and the clinical director, focusing on trauma. Clients of all ages and demographics are accepted for the program—nobody is turned away for their inability to pay for treatment. Access to recovery vouchers and a sliding scale pay system are available for potential clients.

Extras

RMBH works in tandem with the county probation department, local school districts and healthcare systems. It has its own labs where urine analyses are conducted for probation and DUI clients.

In Summary

RMBH is in prime territory for handling a diverse population of clients in need of treatment. Being so near to a cluster of prisons, there is no shortage of individuals in need of recovery assistance. Dedicated to creating new lives and fresh starts and filling empty hearts with hope, RMBH is on the front lines of substance abuse treatment in Colorado.
