In 2014, Rochester General and Unity Health systems merged to create Rochester Regional Health, a full-service hospital that now provides OASAS-certified detoxresidential and outpatient treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. Among these is Rochester Regional Chemical Dependency Outpatient, a long-standing program that has been serving its community since 1980.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to beginning treatment, potential clients undergo a phone screening followed by an in-person assessment with a counselor who then develops an individualized treatment plan. Participants meet regularly with this counselor throughout treatment to ensure they stay on track. If detox or a higher level of care is needed, clients are referred to Rochester Region Health’s one-week outpatient detox program or Hope Haven, its inpatient treatment facility.

Outpatient treatment consists of groupindividual and family therapy using the Stages of Change Model, as well as evidence-based practices such as DBT, CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Groups contain no more than 20 clients and address anger management, life skills and relapse prevention, as well as other educational topics and peer support. Although the frequency and length of treatment is dependent on the client, most begin by attending group three times a week. Individual and family sessions are scheduled as needed.

Clients with a dual diagnosis are provided with additional psychiatric support. Though treatment is not 12-step-based, counselors highly recommend clients attend outside AA and NA meetings and find a sponsor. Staff includes psychiatrists, RNs, LSWs, CASACs and nutritionists.

Extras

Staff nutritionists meet with clients to discuss healthy diets and lifestyles. While it doesn’t have an official aftercare program, Rochester Regional can provide referrals to outside agencies.

The outpatient detox program is up to a week-long and consists of counseling in conjunction with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) via Suboxone for opiate withdrawal and phenobarbital for alcohol dependence.

In Summary

In all, Rochester Regional Chemical Dependency Outpatient offers comprehensive treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. Using a combination of evidence-based techniques and educational groups, clients acquire tools to help them achieve long-term sobriety. With the backing of its larger parent hospital, the participants of the chemical dependency program are afforded the perks of a medical staff as well as additional support for co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the flexibility in intensity and length allows clients to have a program that caters to their specific needs. For those in the area, Rochester Regional Health Chemical Dependency Outpatient is a valuable resource for addiction treatment.
