Road to Recovery is a 12-step based transitional living facility in Houston, Texas for men recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. With a focus on helping clients adjust to living sober, this 90-day program provides a safe and structured environment for growth and development at an affordable price. Through counseling, peer support, didactic groups and spirituality, residents of Road to Recovery continue to build a foundation and gain tools to help them on their journey.
Accommodations and Amenities
The 2,500 square foot Road to Recovery home sits on a quiet, treelined residential street. Its four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms are shared amongst up to eight clients at a time, who also split up various chores around the house. All linens are provided so clients need not bring much with them beyond clothes and toiletries. Food is also part of the package and the kitchen is kept well-stocked. Residents are expected to prepare their own breakfast and lunch during the week, but an in-house chef prepares dinner, Mondays through Fridays. On the weekends, residents are invited to prepare meals from what is available in the kitchen or head over to the McDonald’s around the corner.
Rules and Regulations
To be admitted into the home, potential clients must have a social security card, valid Texas ID and at least 30 days clean and sober. They undergo an in-person interview process and take a tour of the facility. Clients coming directly from detox can be picked up and transported directly to the house.
During the first week only, residents are asked to remain on the property to get adjusted to their new living circumstances. After this, most days are spent out of the house at work, looking for work or at 12-step meetings. Though not a requirement, residents often stick together when they venture outside of the home. In the morning and evening, residents attend group and individual counseling based on 12-step philosophies and literature. The staff consist of an LCDCs and intern who together facilitate the groups.
After completing the 90-day program, clients are invited to move into one of Road to Recovery’s extended living homes, where they get more privacy and autonomy. Though clients are expected to pay rent just like they would in any roommate situation, the extended living homes are filled with sober men and the bear benefits of continued peer support. This is the path that sober living recommends as the smartest way to transition back to independent living.
In all, Road to Recovery is a solid option for gender-specific transitional living. An ideal step-down from residential treatment, the three-month long program is very affordable—completely covered by the state after an initial $1,200 intake fee— and by offering continued treatment, peer support and encouragement to start building an outside sober life. Road to Recovery remains a valuable resource for recovering men in the area.
