Riviera Maya opened in 2016 just south of Cancún in the resort district of Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The facility offers luxury substance abuse treatment for an affordable price in one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. Founder and Clinical Director Mauricio Vellarde has more than 20 years of experience in substance abuse treatment in the US, Mexico and Canada. Riviera Maya provides treatment to clients who are 18 years and older. Inpatient treatment is available with specialized tracks, such as 12-step based recovery and targeted dual diagnosis care.
Accommodations and Food
Riviera Maya’s residential facilities are located in a luxury condo complex that can accommodate up to 30 rehab clients at a time. Each resident is housed in a private room with a queen or king bed, big screen TV and an en suite bathroom, some with Jacuzzi tubs. The facility also includes meeting rooms, a media lounge, a dining room and a beautiful communal outdoor space with smoking areas, a pool, tennis courts, soccer fields and a gym.
All meals are prepared on site and included in the price of stay. Plenty of dietary options are available for each meal including traditional Mexican food and more American choices at each meal. Clients can eat in their rooms or take their meals in the on-site café area.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Riviera Maya is completely individualized and the duration of the program is 30 to 60 days. Detox is not offered on site, so it is recommended that new clients complete this phase before beginning treatment. Referrals to a Canadian hospital that has a cooperative relationship with Riviera Maya are available upon request.
Upon admission, clients spend every day attending individual therapy with an assigned counselor and taking part in group therapy twice a day. Weekly schedules include time for guided meditation, completing written assignments, off-site adventure excursions and time to swim or work out. Treatment uses CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), the 12-step framework and experiential modalities such as art therapy and meditation. Clients are also offered transportation to AA/NA meetings. Support for co-occurring disorders is available in the form of specialized groups and medication management.
Treatment is available in both English and Spanish, as some of the staff are from the US or Canada. Riviera Maya employs a number of licensed counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists, medical professionals, financial case managers and recovery techs.
Extras
Weekly excursions include snorkeling, cave diving, zip-lining, hiking, biking, exploring local ruins or beaches.
Riviera Maya aftercare includes offering referrals and making sure recovery will continue at home.
