The Basics
Riverdale Mental Health Association was founded in 1959 by the leaders of New York’s Ethical Culture Society to provide behavioral health and supportive services to the residents of Upper Manhattan, The Bronx and Westchester County. RMHA offers a wide variety of services, including ReSolve Center for Recovery, an outpatient substance abuse treatment program. RMHA also has an outpatient mental health treatment program, PROS, and often enrolls clients in both programs to provide comprehensive dual diagnosis support.
RMHA serves over 2,000 clients each year and has earned the Mental Health Agency Award from the New York City Department of Mental Health for exceptional performance.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients receive a treatment plan that includes individual and group therapy over a six-, nine- or 12-month period. Most clients attend individual and group therapy once a week. Clients are also encouraged to attend 12-step meetings while in treatment, and RMHA hosts a weekly on-site meeting.
Both evening and daytime groups are available. They’re led by CASACs who use CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the 12-step framework to explore relapse prevention, anger management, family of origin issues and troubleshooting in recovery. Gender-specific groups are also available.
RMHA also has psychiatrists, physicians and MSWs on staff who are qualified to treat co-occurring disorders. Clients dually-enrolled in the PROS program also attend psychoeducation groups on managing mental health diagnoses and building life skills. RMHA’s physicians can also prescribe Suboxone for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT).
Extras
RMHA provides treatment in Spanish. Additionally, as clients progress in their ReSolve treatment plan, they can take advantage of RMHA’s employment assistance services to secure work and further training.
ReSolve and PROS are just two tracks available for those seeking support; its flagship programs include a family support program as well as services for seniors 60 and older, and two supportive housing programs.
