Riverbend Center for Mental HealthRiverbend Center for Mental Health Review

The Riverbend Center for Mental Health was founded in 1950 about 70 miles west of Huntsville in Russellville, Alabama. Riverbend provides a variety of mental health, and psychiatric services to citizens of Northwest Alabama. The facility began offering substance abuse treatment in the 1980’s and today operates a residential program for men as well as a co-ed Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults.

Accommodations and Food

Riverbend operates a men’s residential program in Russellville called the Sunrise Lodge. At the Sunrise Lodge, residents live in a cottage-style six-bedroom house situated in a woodsy areaThe house holds up to 12 men at a time, with each resident sharing a bedroom with two twin beds. The cottage also has a media room with a TV and DVD player and residents hang out and watch movies during downtime. The house has laundry facilities on-site and residents are responsible for washing their own clothes. Residents are assigned chores and required to help with the upkeep of the house.

Next to the cottage is a double-wide trailer where the Riverbed hosts the counseling and meals. Sunrise serves three meals a day in the double-wide’s kitchen. The center has an onsite chef who prepares dinner and residents prepare their own breakfast and lunch with food that the Sunrise provides. The kitchen also has snacks available throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

Riverbend’s residential program lasts for 21 days and consists of group and individual therapy as well as on-site 12-step meetings. Clients are required to attend two group meetings a day and one individual session a week. In these meetings, counselors use CBT techniques to address client’s addiction issues. Riverbend also places a great deal of focus on addressing triggers and relapse prevention. Clients must attend at least one 12-step recovery session a day; whether that be the on-site Big Book study, recovery speaker or an outside AA or NA meeting. Also, some of Riverbend’s groups are geared towards step work, and the clients are assigned homework while in the program.

The residential program has three licensed counselors on staff, including LSWs and LPCs. Riverbend also has residential managers who stay with the client’s overnight. These residential managers are usually in recovery as well and Riverbend believes that they serve as role models to clients. Riverbend also offers dual diagnosis support and takes time during the initial assessment to determine if the client has a co-occurring disorder. If a resident has a co-occurring disorder, they are assigned to a psychiatrist in Riverbend’s nearby mental health hospital.

When clients are discharged from the residential program, they are encouraged to step down into Riverbend’s co-ed IOP. The program lasts for 10 weeks and meets three nights a week for group from 6 to 9 pm. The group is lead by a LSW and the group size is usually around 15 clients. Clients are also required to attend a number of AA meetings a week. The specific number is based on the clients needs, but is usually at least three a week.

Extras

Riverbend also offers an aftercare program that consists of a group meeting once a week. This meeting is aims at providing residents with a safe environment for them to discuss their recovery and checking in with the clients to see how they are doing.

The facility also has group meetings with the clients family members, but only if the client requests this. Family members are recommended to attend local Alanon groups that focus on the recovery of family member from the harm from the client’s addiction.

Riverbend Center for Mental Health provides residents of northwest Alabama access to a comprehensive array of affordable, professional medical and rehabilitative services for treatment substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Through this program, clients participate in group, individual, and family therapy as well as receive an introduction to community self-help groups.
