River Valley Behavioral Health (1)River Valley Behavioral Health Review

A member of the River Valley and Affiliates group (which has separate locations in Kentucky, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina and Texas), River Valley Behavioral Health in Owensboro, Kentucky offers an array of mental health and substance abuse services for adults and adolescents. Their substance abuse programs are available in outpatient, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and day treatment forms, the most intense of which meets Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.

Accommodations and Food

Residential clients are housed in facility-operated, off-site apartments near the treatment facility. Clients share rooms with one or at most two other roommates at a time, and all rooms come equipped with twin beds, basic furnishings and private bathrooms. The on-staff cook provides a hot lunch and dinner during the week, so residents are on their own for breakfast and weekend meals. These typically turn out to be a team effort, with cooking duties divided equally among clients, in shifts. Though residents only stay at River Valley for four weeks, the facility still makes an effort to sponsor recreational activities such as trips to the movies or to a local bowling alley.

Treatment and Staff

River Valley’s residential program is a 28-day curriculum consisting of group and individual therapy, alcohol and drug educational classes, relapse prevention counseling, family sessions and an introduction to the 12 steps. River Valley does not offer a medical detox though it advertises a “social detox,” wherein residents kick drugs without medication while monitored by non-medical staff. Finally, all clients must arrive having completed a physical and a TB test. Days at River Valley begin at 8 am and last until 4 pm, at which point residents have some time to relax or read and write before dinner. After that, clients are transported to outside 12-step meetings.

In addition to adult treatment, River Valley also has an inpatient mental health program for children and adolescents held in an 80-bed, non-profit psych hospital for those between the ages of three and 17. The private facility is massive, measuring in at 70,000 square feet and situated on a 40-acre campus. It also comes equipped with its own school, gymnasium and activity areas. For those who could benefit from a more home-style environment, River Valley also has two smaller nine-bed psychiatric residential treatment facilities, or PRTFs, which provide schooling and therapy specifically for mental health treatment.

The staff is made up of CADCs who serve as primary therapists and operate under the direction of an on-staff physician. Due to their limited admittance (with client rolls typically limited to about 11 people per four-week session), their staff is also quite small. Three or four licensed counselors handle most of the group therapy, joined by varying numbers of staff who are still in school and not yet certified. There is no psychiatrist on staff, but River Valley can provide referrals when necessary.

Extras

Once the initial four weeks is up, River Valley residents are given the option of aftercare, which can be attended for an additional 11 months. This next phase of treatment consists of one group meeting per week with access to individual sessions at their facility, for a scaled down rate of cost.

In Summary

With over 21 multidimensional programs, River Valley Behavioral Health is an organization with vast resources. While its primary inpatient program is only 28-days, it makes the most of that time by keeping a tight and efficient schedule. The extended 11 months of access to aftercare is definitely a bonus of their program sure to help clients get back what they put in. While the residential program lacks many of the amenities offered at higher-priced luxury rehabs, a boon is that the facility received the National Mental Health Corporations of America’s “Best Practices Award” for client satisfaction. All considered, residents can rest assured they are in good hands at River Valley.
