The Basics
Founded in 1970 and situated on a 14-acre medical campus, River Oaks Hospital provides chemical dependency, dual diagnosis and psychiatric treatment in New Orleans. In addition to its “rapid detoxification” program, it offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The on-site 28-day inpatient program, Recovery to Renewal, treats military personnel exclusively. However, it offer civilians referrals to another inpatient facility.
Treatment and Staff
Face-to-face screening is required prior to admission for all programs and everybody begins with an individualized treatment plan. The detox unit has 26 beds and clients are paired in gender-specific rooms. Detox typically lasts between four to seven days, depending on the client. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) including Suboxone and medical monitoring is available 24/7.
Substance abuse and co-occurring disorders are treated with an evidence-based protocol, which includes CBT and DBT. The 12-step approach is integrated into treatment and clients must attend a minimum of two local AA/NA meetings weekly. IOP clients attend three group sessions, from 9 am to noon, Monday through Friday, while PHP clients are in group sessions from 9 am to 2 pm. Topics discussed during group include relapse prevention, processing, anger management, parenting, grief management, life skills and conflict resolution.
Those in both the IOP and PHP programs meet with their on-site psychiatrists on a weekly basis. The staff is also composed of social workers, registered nurses, certified substance abuse counselors and activity therapists.
Extras
River Oaks Hospital offers a bi-weekly family program on Wednesdays, as well as music therapy, psychodrama and art therapy.
