Rise RecoveryThe Basics

The community substance abuse treatment organization Rise Recovery started in 1977 as the San Antonio, Texas office of Palmer Drug Abuse Program (PDAP). Today, Rise Recovery has three locations in the San Antonio metro area and offers a wide variety of outpatient addiction counseling services, peer support groups and fun sober activities.

PDAP started in 1971 at the Palmer Memorial Church in Houston, Texas by a priest and a recovering addict. Originally designed to help teens using a modified version of the 12 steps, the program grew to include adults and the family members of those struggling with addiction. Over the years, PDAP has opened rehabs in several Texas cities, as well as California, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

Treatment and Staff

All Rise Recovery programs are offered on an outpatient basis. Those requiring detox or inpatient treatment are referred to other local facilities. Clients who need dual diagnosis support are also provided with referrals to physicians or psychiatrists. Clients can find help at Rise simply by just showing up at a recovery meeting. There is no formal admissions process.

Clients at Rise are provided with individualized treatment. Treatment usually lasts for at least six months, with individual sessions once or twice a week. Programs also include family therapy if necessary. On-site Rise 12-step meetings are also required in place of group therapy. There are specialized meetings for teens 17 and under, adults over 18 and families. These meetings are similar in format to other 12-step meetings, but have been modified to include time during the sharing for feedback from both peers and staff. Meetings also include discussions about the disease concept of addiction, communication skills and relapse prevention.

The staff includes counselors, case managers and family advocates. Almost all of the PDAP and Rise Recovery counselors, coaches and staff are in recovery and offer their personal experience along with professional education and training to their jobs.

Extras

Each PDAP counseling office also serves as a safe haven and activity center where members can do homework, socialize and meet with their sponsors or recovering peers. The activity centers are always staffed and have pool tables, video games, outdoor games and athletic equipment.

In Summary

Rise Recovery provides free, community-based treatment services for substance abuse. While its programs may not be suitable for those requiring medial detox or inpatient treatment, Rise provides a strong network of recovery resources for those in the San Antonio area.
