The Basics
Located in the Provo suburb of Orem, Utah Rise Above is an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program for adolescents. It offers flexible and individualized treatment programs for clients 13 to 18-years-old who are struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Options include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and basic outpatient care.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients are placed in the appropriate level of care. They can either enroll in the PHP, an intensive track that includes alternative schooling so they don’t lose ground in their education, the IOP, which doesn’t include schooling or outpatient but is completely individualized.
The PHP is five days a week from 8 am to 4 pm and includes time for workouts, on-site 12-step meetings, individual and group therapy. The IOP is three nights a week from 5 to 8 pm and includes group and individual therapy as well as relapse prevention techniques. All of the programs employ evidence-based practices, such as CBT, and holistic approaches like equine and art therapy and dance. Treatment groups are small, ranging from 10 to 15 clients, and individual therapy is scheduled based on an as-needed basis. The exact length and intensity of the programs is also dependent on the client. Although the organization is not 12-step oriented, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA meetings to supplement their recovery.
For clients with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and obsessive-compulsive disorder, there is a MD on staff who specializes in adolescent addiction and dual diagnosis support. Additional staff consists of LCSWs and Master’s-level counselors.

The Rise Above office also offers a game room and meetings place for young people to gather and enjoy fellowship and sober fun. There is also a thriving youth recovery scene in the Provo/Orem community, with both faith-based and 12-step oriented youth groups available.

Rise Above is an innovative outpatient facility that helps young people address substance abuse. Based on the idea that it is better for young people to stay at home during treatment, Rise Above is a great outpatient option for troubled teens.
