The Basics
Rio Grande Alcoholism Treatment Program, Inc. was founded in Embudo, New Mexico, in 1978, to provide substance abuse treatment using the successful Minnesota Model pioneered at Hazelden. Over three decades, Rio Grande ATP has provided substance abuse services across the spectrum from detox through residential, outpatient and extended care. Currently, Rio Grande serves those struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders with outpatient care centered in Las Vegas and Taos.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients undergo a four-hour assessment, which is broken down into two visits. They receive individualized treatment plans, and those requiring medication management for co-occurring disorders are provided with psychiatric referrals. Those needing detox are provided with appropriate recommendations.
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) treatment length is approximately six months, but varies per client’s needs. On a weekly basis, the IOP is a nine-hour track, and the outpatient program is typically between one and two hours. IOP is from 6 pm to 9 pm, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The IOP consists of group and individual therapy, and educational classes.
At Rio Grande ATP, evidence-based modalities, specifically the Matrix model, are utilized during treatment. Group topics include goal setting, cognitive behaviors, relapse prevention, guilt and shame, sex in recovery, truthfulness, spirituality, money management, goal setting, anger management, domestic violence and co-occurring disorders. While no gender-specific groups are currently available, staff is working hard to create a women’s group. Attendance at 12-step meetings is encouraged, but not mandated. Educational topics focus on the physiological effects of alcohol, marijuana and prescription medications. Groups range between 12 and 16 clients.
At Rio Grande ATP, there are six licensed clinicians, including licensed substance abuse associates, LADCs, and a licensed independent social worker, as well as administrative support.
Extras
Rio Grande ATP offers a monthly AIM program, which consists of a daylong session where clients learn motivational tools, followed by a two-day grief and loss program, which is popular with criminal justice clients, where the concept of loss includes deprivation of freedom due to incarceration, and not just losing loved ones to death.
Besides English, other language services include Spanish and Tewa, which is indigenous to the Pueblo Native Americans. Clients are allowed to bring coffee, soda or water during group. Additionally, graduating clients receive a cake or pie to share with group members.
