Billings MontanaRimrock New Choices Review

Rimrock is the largest treatment facility for addiction and co-occurring disorders in Billings, Montana. The New Choices program provides inpatient care specifically catered to adolescent boys between the ages of 13 and 18 in an intimate setting. The New Choices program accommodates up to seven boys and provides detox, medication management, group, individual and family therapy as well as art and recreational therapy. Treatment relies heavily on the 12-step philosophy and includes aftercare planning. Treatment is highly structured and includes 24-hour supervision.

Accommodations and Staff

Rimrock’s New Choices program accommodates seven boys at a time in a group-home setting. Clients share double- and triple-occupancy bedrooms with basic furnishings. The boys sleep in twin-sized beds and share dressers, desks and a closet.

There’s a communal living area equipped with a TV and comfortable seating. The facility also has an exercise room with standard gym equipment which boys are required to use a few days a week as part of recreation therapy. Other activities include hiking, bowling and playing sports.

Three hot meals are provided every day of the week. Food is planned and prepared by qualified cooking staff and all meals are eaten together. Special dietary needs can be accommodated as long as they are clearly communicated to staff prior to admission.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at NC begins with a bio-psycho-social assessment followed by a psychological evaluation to determine each adolescent’s unique needs. Clients are then matched with a primary counselor who helps establish an individualized treatment plan. Clients with dual diagnosis are offered medication management services by an on-site psychiatrist.

The inpatient program requires a commitment of at least 35 days and focuses on skill building and coping strategies through daily group therapy. Individual and family therapy sessions are held on a less frequent basis with a minimum of one session a week. Treatment methods fall under the Seven Challenges Program framework that utilizes evidence-based techniques to motivate and cultivate a commitment to change.

In addition to the use of combined therapy sessions, clients are introduced to the first five steps of the 12-step program and required to be of service to the community by adopting a park or roadway for weekly volunteer service. Art therapy and canine care are also incorporated into weekly sessions. For canine care, adolescents are taken to animal shelters to interact with stray dogs to support emotional development and relationship building. These alternative methods also aim to encourage creative endeavors for guests to help them understand the illness of addiction. Educational tutoring and group learning are available to ensure that residents stay on track with school work.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can either be used as a step down from residential treatment or as a stand-alone less intensive level of care. This program is structured exactly like the inpatient program, but treatment sessions are co-ed and only require nine- to ten-hours of treatment each week.

Rimrock’s New Choices staff includes registered nurses, psychiatrists, LCSWs, LACs and recreation coordinators.

Extras

Clinicians work with residents to develop aftercare plans by organizing groups that focus on relapse prevention. Meanwhile, family services also include educational lectures to educate parents on their child’s disease. Additionally, adolescents are offered DUI/MIP education programs and school based programs.

Adult services include inpatient and outpatient programs to help treat substance abuse, gambling and sexual addiction. Interventions, detox and sober living options are also available. All clients also have access to on-site drug testing.

Summary

At Rimrock, adults and adolescents have access to a variety of inpatient and outpatient services to help treat addiction. Adolescent boys seeking residential treatment can benefit from the New Choices program that is highly structured and intimate recovery experience. Treatment aims to address the adolescent as a whole by implementing various therapeutic and holistic techniques and participation in the 12-steps.
