Right Turn Recovery offers outpatient chemical dependency support and a men-only extended care option. The founder and CEO, Woody Geissman, built a clinical facility that links creative expression with proper addiction treatment. Both men and women are allowed in the outpatient program, which is focused on harnessing creativity and alternative treatment modalities. The CARF accredited outpatient facility and sober living home are located in Watertown, Massachusetts. The men’s residential facility offers structured living that solidifies skills and the client’s recovery path.
Accommodations and Amenities
The extended care program is in an historic New England house that accommodates up to 16 male residents. While some of the treatment is facilitated at the residence, clients also attend therapeutic activities at the outpatient facility. All rooms are semi-private—housing two, three or four residents each. Cost adjusts according to the room arrangements or any special requests. Bathrooms are shared by clients but they must provide their own toiletries. The house provides linens and towels, but clients must maintain cleanliness and do their own laundry.
Living room, kitchen and dining areas are always open for client usage. There is a TV and media for use during approved hours. Residents learn to prepare healthy meals for themselves and collaborate on menu planning for the entire house. Grocery shopping is a house activity and transportation is provided. Coffee and sugar are allowed in moderation. There is an exercise space as well as quiet outdoor areas. A garden is available in the backyard for reflection and socializing.
Rules and Regulations
Right Turn’s extended care program is a residential treatment model that allows its clients more freedom since they’ve already completed a primary program. For four to six months, clients solidify foundations established in treatment. In addition to continuing group therapy and individual therapy, clients learn life skills such as budgeting, nutrition and housekeeping. Since the program is semi-structured, clients must attend 12-step meetings or other forms of community support.
Dual diagnosis support is offered through additional psychiatric care. Clients that are in need of medication management are seen by the staff psychiatrist on an as-needed basis. Groups are facilitated by CADCs or Master’s-level clinicians. Clients may also be transported to be seen by a physician if they have any medical needs. The house always has a residential tech present to work with clients through urgent issues and to help support them as they transition.
When the client works his way toward discharge, more freedoms may be allowed. Laptops and cellphones may be utilized but monitored by the staff. Investigating job leads and education is encouraged. Staff also assist with looking for further services like other sober living homes or other addiction-oriented referrals. Visitation and leaving the home must be approved by a staff member and are dependent on the client’s progress. Special limitations of freedoms may be given at any given time and all clients are regularly drug tested.
Extended care clients are given a gym membership as part of their perks, and several times per week clients are transported. Since Right Turn is also a creative focused space, clients are encouraged to continue their pursuit of art. Through music, drawing, journaling, theater or movement, clients learn self-expression and are able to showcase their talents at Right Turn events. Through the Right Turn LIVE! Sober Café and the Del Fuegos Music Room, clients can come together and create. The alumni community is strong, and regularly helps out at the facility through speaker panels and outside events.
The Right Turn Recovery extended care program offers men in recovery the space to solidify their recovery and learn life skills while living in a beautiful home. Clients continue attending group and individual therapy coupled with recovery groups in the community. Clients learn how to work together as a community on the path towards health and wellness without the use of drugs and alcohol.
