The Basics

Located in the bucolic, Pasadena-adjacent foothills of Altadena, CA, Ridgeview Ranch Treatment Center has been offering drug and alcohol inpatient treatment since 2007. With a 12-step foundation integrating a holistic therapy approach, Ridgeview specializes in co-occurring disorders. The facility also provides sober living as well as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Accommodations and Food

With the San Gabriel Mountains as a stunning backdrop, Ridgeview consists of a ranch-style house that accommodates 10 women as well as a two-story Spanish-style structure housing 10 men, with Southwestern décor that is both tasteful and calming. Clients stay in double rooms with comfy twin beds or, for an additional fee, in single rooms with spacious queen-size beds. TV viewing is allowed in a common living room.

Ridgeview boasts a talented chef who tailors high-end healthy meals to the needs of clients—those with food allergies or dietary restrictions, fear not. Coffee is allowed in the morning and during meetings.

Treatment and Staff

While there’s no on-site detox, Ridgeview is partnered with a number of local detox centers. The first order of business after check-in is a psychiatric and psychological evaluation as Ridgeview focuses on treating co-occurring disorders.

Based on the 12-step model, the facility’s program—offered in 30, 60 and 90-day stays—is designed to address and correct addictive and self-destructive lifestyle patterns. CBT is the main treatment modality though psychodrama and hypnotherapy are also used, and the menu of group therapy topics includes stress reduction, relationship counseling, family counseling and relapse prevention as well as gender-specific issues. Holistic offerings include yoga and meditation.

The daily schedule at Ridgeview starts with a refreshing 7 am walk around the famous Rose Bowl (just minutes from the grounds), breakfast followed by an hour of meditation, individual counseling—offered five days a week—and lunch. By 1 pm there’s an hour-long relapse prevention group followed by hypnotherapy and another dose of individual counseling from 4 to 5 pm. After dinner, clients have grief and anxiety therapy, a 12-step meeting and time for chores with lights out at 11:30 pm. In between, there’s plenty of break time.

With a four-to-one client-to-staff ratio, Ridgeview employs 30-plus staffers. The core group, led by psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) Robert Matirko, who has been practicing for about 40 years, consists of seven directors, managers and counselors (three men and four women) with decades of clinical addiction experience. There is no medical doctor on-site, but there are full-time nurses and a psychiatric technician on hand. Ridgeview’s counselors, all certified are primarily sober addicts and alcoholics.

Extras

In addition to the aforementioned yoga, clients have access to a fitness center that is stocked with weights, treadmills, bicycles and resistance-training equipment. There’s also a heated spa and pool open year round. There are regular group outings, plus pet, art and equine therapy.

In Summary

Clients looking for a top-notch facility for a reasonable price could definitely find it at Ridgeview Ranch. The strong focus on co-occurring disorders and holistic approach make it a solid Southern California option.
