British Columbia CanadaRevolution Recovery Review

Revolution Recovery is located in Surrey, British Columbia and offers residential substance abuse treatment and sober living to men ages 19 and up. This two-phase recovery program walks men through the initial recovery stages during residential treatment—phase one—then continues to provide structure and a recovery community as they work towards autonomy during phase two, the sober living environment.

Revolution was founded over four years ago. In 2016, Devin McGuire began leading the program, lending his own personal recovery experience and bringing additional treatment modalities and greater structure. Revolution takes a holistic approach to recovery, using both CBT and the 12-step framework.

Accommodations and Food

While enrolled in the first phase of treatment—a 60-day residential program—men are accommodated in a modern home with single, double and triple-occupancy rooms (self-pay clients typically have single rooms and Ministry-subsidized clients have roommates). The residence has a kitchen staff that prepares all meals.

On weekends, residents can watch TV in the common areas, and the house often hosts movie nights. There’s also a small weight room for exercise. For the first 35 days of treatment, residents cannot have access to personal phones; after, they may use phones on weekends. The residence also has a computer that can be used under supervision for treatment activities and emergencies.

When clients are ready to step down to the second phase of treatment, they move into the sober living facility, a modern residence about a 15-minute walk from the residential home. Sober living clients are accommodated in single- or double-occupancy rooms, and are responsible for purchasing their own food, preparing meals and cleaning the home.

Treatment and Staff

Upon entering the first stage of treatment, clients have a 35-day restriction period during which they are not allowed to leave the residence except for emergency care. Residents attend group therapy twice a day and have individual therapy scheduled as-needed. During therapy, staff incorporates CBT, Seeking Safety and the 12-step framework to explore relapse prevention, the disease model of addiction, communication skills and establishing boundaries. Clients also have art and music therapy each week.

Revolution is known for its caring and engaged staff, most of whom lend their personal recovery experiences to their work. The treatment team includes Certified Addiction Counselors (CACs), many with additional social work and peer counseling experience. Revolution also works with a number of nearby psychiatrists who provide dual diagnosis support, and clients are encouraged to locate counselors practicing nearby for on-going individual therapy after their restrictions phase. Counselors also help clients find dental and medical care while in residence.

Revolution hopes that each client commits to a path of peer support while in residential treatment. Clients are required to attend daily onsite 12-step or SMART Recovery meetings during their first 35 days. After, they may choose to attend neighborhood meetings.

Sober living clients must be actively seeking work or maintain employment while living in the home. They’re welcome to stay as long as they’d like, but they must attend at least three peer support meetings each week and submit to drug screens.

Extras

Residential clients have weekly acupuncture appointments. After the 35-day restriction phase, clients can get passes for visits to a nearby gym with a swimming pool.

Residential visiting hours are scheduled weekdays and weekend afternoons. Revolution often asks alumni and others in recovery to speak at the house for additional support and inspiration.

In Summary

Revolution Recovery provides holistic, 12-step supported residential and sober living for men in Surrey. The empathetic and approachable staff provide emotional support as well as recovery tools and do their best to connect clients with additional medical and mental healthcare providers. Graduates of the 60-day residential program may continue in its sober living home as they transition to employment and achieve stability and independence.
