Restoration Ranch Review
Located about 35 miles northeast of San Diego in the town of Ramona, California, Restoration Ranch offers a gender-specific faith-based residential substance abuse program with a Christian focus. Founded in 1999, the facility is a non-profit ministry of the Good Samaritans of San Diego that offers a low-cost recovery program for men over the age of 18. Restoration Ranch welcomes men who are court-ordered to treatment or coming out of jail as well as those who are self-referred.
Accommodations and Food
Set upon an expansive property in rural Ramona, the Ranch has room for 30 total residents at a time. Clients share dorm-style housing which features bunk beds, basic furnishings and shared bathrooms in the hallways. The Ranch community is highly immersive and expects residents to have a motivated and substantial role in their own recovery. The facility also has dedicated spaces for GED programs and Bible study.
Three nutritious meals a day are prepared by the residents with food donated from local church organizations. There is also a huge garden on-site and clients take turns tending it during the summer months. Residents eat together in a large, cafeteria-style dining room.
Treatment and Staff
The program at Restoration Ranch can last anywhere from 30 days to a year. Days are largely filled with chores around the property, 12-step meetings, Christian-oriented educational workshops, Bible study classes and meals. There are no detox or dual diagnosis support services offered, but referrals can be made if necessary. For about four hours every day, residents are expected to work on the Ranch, usually some form of manual labor. Based on their personal treatment plan, the men participate in individual and group therapy as well as activities based on Christian principles.
The Executive Director of Restoration Ranch is a former resident. Brian Storm completed the program and became a licensed pastor before returning to run the facility with his wife Teri. The staff also includes a psychologist and certified substance abuse counselors.
Extras
Restoration Ranch has a local seven-bed sober living facility designed for men who have completed treatment and are looking for a safe and sober place to live. The men are expected to stay sober while they work or go to school.
