The Basics
Founded in 2011 and located in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Restoration Counseling and Community Services offers Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs to adults recently out of the criminal justice system who are in need of treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. Owned and operated by a law enforcement professional, Restoration’s evidence-based treatment aims to assist all clients on their road to recovery by treating them with respect and compassion regardless of their past transgressions.
Accommodations and Amenities
Restoration operates two supportive, gender-specific housing options for male and female IOP clients who need a safe place to stay for up to 30 days. Each of the two houses can accommodate 12 people, with two beds to a room and a total of three bathrooms per house. The houses have large kitchens and living rooms. Residents are responsible for their own food and personal items and cleaning duties are shared in a rotating schedule that the clients themselves design.
Treatment and Staff
Restoration’s main treatment goal is behavior modification, with individualized treatment provided to suit each client’s needs. Treatment options include individual therapy and group therapy, using methods such as expressive therapy and CBT. Gender-specific therapy, family therapy and anger management are also offered.
Restoration has its treatment model called the Day One Program, which is integrated into all of its programs and recognizes that those leaving the criminal justice system are high-risk and may require a more rigorously disciplined treatment experience than others suffering from substance abuse.
Individual therapy is prescribed once per week and group therapy occurs three times per week, with the frequency of all other therapies dependent on the individual programs of each client. Counselors are never assigned more than 10 clients at one time.
In the daytime, there are separate IOPs for male and female clients. In addition, Restoration also offers a coed IOP in the evening that includes group therapy four consecutive nights a week and individual therapy once a week. Clients attend the evening program for roughly one year. Family therapy is available, consisting of weekly therapy with a counselor.
Restoration does not offer detox and does not use the 12-step model (though staff can refer clients to local AA meetings upon request).
The facility is prepared to help clients with co-occurring disorders, though there are no nurses or doctors on-site. Mental health counselors and more than 16 LADCs make up the majority of the staff, though there are also several LPCs. The counseling staff is predominantly women, with only two male counselors.

Career education and job-seeking assistance are offered through the aftercare program.
Restoration is the only accredited treatment facility in Minnesota that caters specifically to clients who have served time in the criminal justice system.
