Resolution Ranch Academy is a residential treatment center and therapeutic boarding school for boys between the ages of 13 and 17. Resolution Ranch Academy operates a five-phase program on a ranch outside of Austin in Cameron, Texas. The goal is for students who have struggled with addiction and behavioral problems to experience a safe, structured recovery experience without the stigma of boot camp or troubled teen programs.
Resolution Ranch was founded in 2004 by former NFL player, Scott McGarrahan. All treatment combines evidence-based therapy methods with 12-step principles, education and life skills training. Resolution Ranch Academy provides also psychiatric services for those who need dual diagnosis support.
Accommodations and Food
Resolution Ranch Academy is a 500-acre ranch with a lake. The cabin-like facility has room for 45 boys, housed in dorm-style accommodations. Treatment, housing, educational activities, medical care, meals and therapy all take place in the main building. The cabins have sleeping quarters furnished with twin beds and linens, as well as storage areas for personal belongings. Additionally, the facility has a computer lab, library, gym and fitness center.
Food is served in a large cafeteria with plenty of healthy options as well as comfort food. Sugar intake is monitored and caffeine is not allowed.
Treatment and Staff
The duration of the program is between six and 10 months, based on the client’s progress through the five levels. Treatment is individualized for every client. Boys with histories of violence, arson, suicide attempts or harming animals are not admitted. Tuition covers room a d board, food, education, therapy and the equine program.
The five phases are designed to help clients progress though the program and build skills. Treatment incorporates daily equine therapy and, in keeping with this theme, the phases are called Ranch Hands, Cattle Men, Ropers, Wranglers and Cowboys. Treatment also incorporates group and individual therapy and the 12 steps to motivate clients to commit to a change and set recovery goals. The boys are provided with transportation to off-site AA/NA meetings several times a week, but not required to attend. Clients also learn life skills, coping skills, how to navigate situational teen problems and functioning with co-occurring disorders.
Since all residents also simultaneously attend school, learning disabilities are taken into consideration when designing a recovery program and medication management is available if required. There is a special focus on building healthy relationships with family members, learning study skills, physical fitness and appropriate ways to deal with stress. Family members are also integrated into the treatment process and participate in therapy.
Led by McGarrahan, the staff at Resolution Ranch includes LCSWs, MFTs, nurse practitioners and a psychiatric nurse. Additional staff includes specialized coaches and educators, kitchen staff and counselors specifically trained to handle admissions and parent communications.
The Ranch has a comprehensive family program that integrates loved ones in the recovery process, helping to develop healthy communication skills. Outdoor activities like fishing on the lake, hiking the trails, camping and horseback riding are incorporated into down time.
Resolution Ranch Academy provides residential treatment for young men who are struggling with substance abuse and behavioral heath issues. By living on the beautiful ranch while building healthy relationships and getting therapy, clients can immerse themselves in life while developing the tools required for lasting recovery. Parents and other loved ones are also integrated in to the process, so the entire family has the opportunity to recover.
