Utica New YorkThe Basics

The First Presbyterian Church founded the Rescue Mission of Utica in the 1890s to help rehabilitate the growing alcoholic population of Utica, New York. Located 90 miles Northwest of Albany, Utica is situated at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains and has struggled economically since the decline of manufacturing in the last half of the last century. Nearly one-third of its residents live below the poverty line.

For the last 20 years, the Rescue Mission has operated two substance abuse treatment programs. Its Addictions Crisis Center provides detox and inpatient treatment to men and women with the aim of helping them locate long-term treatment. Its Parker House Residential Aftercare Program is a long-term faith-based residential program for men. The Rescue Mission also operates an emergency shelter, a residential facility for those struggling with mental illness and a learning center, which helps residents with vocational training and job search skills.

Accommodations and Food

Men have shared rooms in the home-like residence, typically double-occupancy. The residence has a kitchen staff that prepares standard American fare and a TV room where residents can relax, play games and read during their down time.

Treatment and Staff

Most men enter Parker House after having completed inpatient treatment at the Rescue Mission’s Addictions Crisis Center or elsewhere. The program describes itself as a “Christian discipleship,” and residents must attend Wednesday and Sunday evening chapel services as well as daily devotions on Christian teachings each morning.

The average stay in the Parker House is six months. Upon admittance to the program, each man commits to a treatment plan that includes outpatient treatment at another facility. Parker House maintains relationships with three local outpatient programs, each with a different level of care—from standard outpatient to Partial-Hospitalization Program (PHP).

Each program is staffed with Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors, including MFTs and CADCs, and men receive individual and group therapy led by credentialed staff. Residents in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support enroll in the Milestones outpatient program, which is equipped to provide therapy and medication management for mental health diagnoses.

In addition to the outpatient treatment programs, residents are required to attend five 12-step meetings each week, with transportation provided by Parker House. Pastor Rick Johnson and a peer counselor are on-site daily to provide supervision, support and guidance to residents.

As men progress in their recovery, they can take advantage of Rescue Mission’s Learning Center to further their education and employment goals. Parker House also provides men with “progress notes,” which is similar to case management services and help men set goals and locate the services and training to achieve them.

Extras

While visitors aren’t allowed at Parker House, men may earn passes to leave the facility to visit family. Parker House has two affiliated transitional care homes to which men may apply after they’ve completed their Parker House treatment plan.

In Summary

The Rescue Mission of Utica has been providing the residents of upstate New York with effective substance abuse, mental health treatment and emergency services for over 100 years. Its Parker House Residential Aftercare Program helps men transition from inpatient treatment to transitional-care through a six-month residential program that provides outpatient treatment, spiritual counseling and peer support in a safe, domestic setting.
