sober living salt lake city utahThe Basics

Based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, Rescue Mission of Salt Lake is an expansive program that provides a range of faith-based residential and sober living services to men and women. Each program offers treatment on a continuum, with several flexible and affordable options.

Accommodations and Amenities

Although Rescue Mission of Salt Lake has several different programs and facilities, the main track is its New Life program for addiction treatment. With accommodations for up to 30 men, residents share rooms with one to two others clients that come with twin beds, dressers and closet space. There is also the Rescue Mission Women’s Center, which can host up to 14 clients in a nearby home with similar accommodations. At both locations, residents are served three meals a day by staff members.

Rules and Regulations

The New Life program lasts for 12 to 13 months and is loosely divided into three phases, all of which require residents to obey a basic behavioral contract and submit to regular and random urinalysis testing.

The initial phase is dedicated primarily to evaluation and stabilization. During this period, clients meet with case managers and counselors, attend AA meetings every week as well as group therapy and Bible study daily. About 30% of the clients complete this stage and move on to phase two, which begins about six months into the program and requires residents to start taking a more active role in helping out around the mission and serving meals. Clients also begin looking for work during this phase.

In phase three, residents are required to secure employment and begin to “pay rent” to their case managers who hold the money for them until graduation. After which, clients look find permanent housing with the help of New Life’s staff and the money they have saved.

Extras

In addition to the above, the organization also offers an emergency services program for the chronically homeless, with room for 80 to 90 people. The accommodations are fairly sparse as they are designed to be temporary, consisting of floor mats, blankets and pillows for men and women. Clients of this program can also come to the facility to shower every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. New coats and clothes are available to them as well. This is not a long-term residential option but rather a stop-gap solution for those in need.

Rescue Mission also offers a more thorough program for the homeless, focused on helping them get a job and rebuild their lives. This program has a total of 55 beds exclusively for men, all of whom stay in a dorm-style group rooms with bunk beds. This track generally lasts for 12 weeks and includes counseling, resume building workshops and help with job searches. Finally, Rescue Mission also provides food boxes to the poor and families not in any of the above programs. Three meals a day are available to those coming in off the street provided that they are willing to attend services in the chapel before eating dinner.

In Summary

Overall, Rescue Mission of Salt Lake offers an array of services for homeless men and women in need of a addiction recovery, food, life skills and a safe and sober living environment. Treatment is 12-step and Christian-based with extended lengths of stay. While its programs are primarily aimed at the homeless population and doesn’t provide dual diagnosis support, Rescue Mission of Salt Lake remains a strong and affordable resource for those in the area who qualify.
