RESADA Review

RESADA stands for Region Six Alcohol and Drug Abuse Company. The facility, located in Las Animas in southeastern Colorado, was created in 1977 as a joint venture between the counties of Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero and Prowers. RESADA provides county-subsidized substance abuse prevention and treatment programs to residents of Sub-State Planning Area Four. Residents outside of the aforementioned counties, however, can also attend treatment at its facility for a higher fee. RESADA’s 30-day residential program treats men and women and includes detox.

Accommodations and Food

RESADA has 19 residential beds and six detox beds. Residents stay in dorm rooms with bunk beds. The facility is modest but comfortable; it has a TV room and outdoor basketball court for recreation. Clients are not permitted cell phones or personal computers. A kitchen staff prepares all meals, taking clients’ preferences and restrictions into account.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admittance to the program, most residents stay in detox for two to five days. Once in residential treatment, they attend group therapy and psychoeducation classes from 8 to 11:30 am and then after lunch, from 1 to 6 pm. Clients also have individual therapy at least once a week. In the evenings, they are allotted time to relax and complete recovery homework. On Sunday evenings, they also attend a 12-step meeting on-site.

The treatment team is primarily made up of CACs. RESADA uses CBT and the 12-step framework in therapy, and groups and classes explore creating boundaries, the disease model of addiction and relapse prevention. While co-occurring disorders are addressed in therapy, clients in need of dual diagnosis support are not an ideal fit for RESADA and are referred to other residential treatment programs.

Extras

Clients are not allowed visitation unless ordered by the referring agency and then must be coordinated with counselors.

While RESADA doesn’t have a formal aftercare program, clients leave treatment with referrals to peer support and outpatient programs and RESADA continues to check in with them by phone each month to see if they need additional support.

RESADA also offers DUI classes and case management services.

In Summary

RESADA’s low-cost residential treatment program provides clients with the individual attention to develop self-awareness and coping skills. It also offers post-treatment follow-up to make sure clients are able to build on the recovery foundation they’ve worked hard to create.
