The Basics
Founded in 1961 in the Chicago suburb of Elgin, Illinois, Renz Addiction Counseling Center provides outpatient substance abuse treatment. Services include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Passages for Women, a female-only outpatient track that offers free childcare. Besides two locations in Elgin, Renz Addiction Counseling Center has facilities in nearby St. Charles and Streamwood.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment length at Renz varies per client. Prior to admission, three in-person interviews are required, including an initial visit where paperwork is completed, followed by an in-person assessment with a substance abuse counselor and a comprehensive assessment with another counselor. The last assessment is done to ensure that Renz Addiction Counseling Center is a proper fit. Detox is not provided, but referrals will be offered if needed. Once admitted, clients receive individualized treatment plans.
The IOP track is scheduled from 6 to 9 pm, Mondays through Thursdays. Weekly treatment includes individual therapy (once per week) and group therapy. At Renz Addiction Counseling Center, several evidence-based modalities are used, including Seeking Safety, Matrix Model, WRAP (Wellness Action Recovery Plan), Active Parenting Now, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT.
Group topics include coping skills, relapse prevention, creating a positive support system, identifying personal issues and an psychoeducational look at the addiction process. While not required, attendance at recovery support meetings is encouraged. Clients requiring medication management for co-occurring disorders are referred to a staff psychiatrist.
Renz Addiction Counseling Center offers outpatient tracks to adolescents, young adults (between the ages of 17 and 21) and adults. Treatment parallels the IOP track and offers family counseling. The adolescent track incorporates Seven Challenges, an evidence-based practice designed for teens. Groups have between three and 12 clients, with seven being the average. Passage Program for Women is catered specifically for female clients who feel awkward sharing in co-ed groups. The groups discuss gender-specific issues, as well as providing free childcare.
Staff includes Director of clinical services, Colleen Koncilja who is a Licensed Clinical Service Worker, a CADC, a CCGC (Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor) and a QHEIC (Qualified HIV Early Intervention Counselor). Eight other full-time counselors are on board, including CADC’s and Master’s-level counselors. There are three part-time counselors, with similar credentials.
Extras
The facility offers two on-site SMART Recovery groups, which are also open to the community. The groups meet from 5:30 to 7 pm Thursdays at the Elgin office, and from 5:30 to 7 pm Mondays at the Streamwood office.
Renz Addiction Counseling Center offers intervention, HIV education, DUI services and support for compulsive gamblers.
