The Basics
Renwick Recovery, Inc. provides long-term transitional care to men and women in Newburgh, New York, a small city on the Hudson River, 60 miles north of New York City. Renwick was founded in 1995 and works with New York’s Department of Social Services to help clients obtain employment, vocational and other supportive services.
Accommodations and Amenities
Residents are housed in a number of adjacent apartment buildings in a quiet residential area in Newburgh. Renwick accommodates both men and women, but apartments are gender-specific and house two residents in each bedroom, with a total of four clients per apartment.
Accommodations are modest but clean and well-kept, and Renwick provides laundry facilities, linens and kitchenware. Clients are responsible for food shopping and preparing their meals (grocery stores are within walking distance). The area is also served by local buses. Each apartment has a TV, and the backyard areas have weights for working out.
Rules and Regulations
Clients can stay in the Renwick program anywhere form six months to two years, though the average stay is six months to one year. Clients must have successfully completed inpatient treatment before enrolling at Renwick. Upon arrival, men and women are enrolled in one of three area Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs). Participation in outpatient treatment is mandatory, and in the initial weeks of treatment, clients must attend IOP five days a week, then they can step down to a less intensive track as their recovery progresses.
Clients must also attend a minimum of five peer support meetings each week—such as NA/AA or Celebrate Recovery—which are easily accessible within walking distance of the apartments. On Sunday nights, Renwick hosts an on-site recovery support meeting which explores topics such as anger management and early recovery issues.
During their first 30 days at Renwick, clients must be in by 9 pm on weekdays and 10 pm on weekends. After the initial phase, curfew is 10 pm on weekdays and 11 pm on weekends. Residents must be up each morning with their bed made and apartment chores completed by 9 am.
Renwick works with Orangeworks, an agency that helps residents with vocational training and job search skills. It also has relationships with several mental health clinics to ensure that each resident has access to comprehensive dual diagnosis support.
Extras
Family members can visit residents after the first 30 days in the program. Renwick also offers bilingual services for Spanish-speaking clients.
In Summary
For over 20 years, Renwick Recovery, Inc., has helped men and women in New York’s Hudson Valley successfully transition from inpatient treatment to independent living. Clients who enroll in Renwick are highly motivated to change, and the staff does everything it can to create a safe atmosphere where they can learn self-reliance and long-lasting life skills.
