RenaissanceThe Basics

Since 1997, the Renaissance Treatment Center has served Prince George’s County Maryland. Located less than ten miles from the White House, in Capitol Heights, RTC offers substance abuse treatment and behavioral health services, including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a basic Outpatient Program, as well as treatment for co-occurring disorders. RTC’s philosophy is to offer individualized treatment based on cognitive-behavioral principles with a non-denominational spiritual component. With this in mind, RTC combines the principles of the 12-step modality with CBT. Dual-diagnosis services are provided, as well.

Treatment and Staff

The RTC IOP is offered to both adults and adolescents. Clients attend three days of group a week for a total of nine hours, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Basic Outpatient group meets Thursday evenings between 6 and 8 pm. Individual counseling may be provided in addition to—or even instead of— group therapy, if requested by the client. Most RTC clients for these two programs are actually referred by correctional departments in the State of Maryland and Washington, DC. RTC does not provide detox, but will offer referrals.

Overall, RTC provides its IOP and basic outpatient clients with addiction assessments, alcohol and drug education classes and on-site drug testing. Groups cover relapse prevention, aftercare, anger management and conflict resolution and there are even family counseling and gender-specific programs offered. Clients are required to attend AA/NA meetings off-site in their free time and provide proof of attendance.

RTC groups have a maximum of 12 clients and are run by a staff of six CADCs, as well as Master’s-level mental health counselors. There is also a psychiatrist on staff who only works with those clients who have co-occurring disorders.

Extras

In addition to outpatient treatment, RTC also provides court-ordered substance abuse evaluations and employer referred counseling and drug testing. RTC is also certified by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration to provide impaired driver services the likes of its MVA approved, 12-hour DWI education classes and MVA approved, 26-week DWI treatment services.

In Summary

The Renaissance Treatment Center has offered its services for almost 20 years now. While it is obviously not the place for those who need inpatient treatment to deal with substance abuse issues, the outpatient services that it provides offer a solid basis for those who need that level of treatment. For residents of the Maryland and DC areas who are looking for an economical recovery option—especially for clients who are believers in the 12-step approach—this may very well be the ideal recovery resource.
