With dozens of facilities throughout South Africa, Relapse Prevention is a wide-ranging behavioral health organization that provides many different services including both outpatient and residential treatment. All told, Relapse Prevention has facilities in Western Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal, The Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape, but the specific programs available at each location may vary. While inpatient programs are available for those in need of intensive residential care, Relapse Prevention also offers flexible outpatient services.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, all participants go through an intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs. Those in need of detox services may need to seek them out before beginning a program.
While the schedules of each plan may vary, treatment typically includes both individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Clients are also required to work a 12-step program while in treatment. As the organization’s name suggests, many of the programs are aimed specifically at preventing drug relapses so groups cover trigger identification, emotional processing, life skills and other coping strategies at length. While more extensive dual diagnosis support is not available, referrals to nearby programs can be made as necessary.
The staff at Relapse Prevention consists of doctors, psychologists, LCSWs, occupational therapists, CADCs, nurses and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Relapse Prevention offers specific treatment for young adults and adolescents as well. Also, in addition to primary care services, the organization provides a wide range of step-down aftercare plans. Those who finish all these programs can also get referrals for secondary sober living environments whenever necessary.
In all, Relapse Prevention is a very broad organization servicing many different parts of South Africa. Treatment plans include evidence-based counseling, 12-step participation and educational life skills sessions. Much of the program consists of teaching relapse prevention skills at all levels of intensity, with specific programs for adolescents and adults alike. While those in need of more intensive psychiatric care may need to get additional aid as well, Relapse Prevention’s many outpatient programs remain a strong resource to the citizens of South Africa.
