Alcohol Rehab Centers

Alcoholism is a deadly disease that affects people of all ages and walks of life. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, alcoholism results in 2.5 million deaths each year.

Alcoholism takes other tolls, as well. Every year, addictive drinking causes legal troubles, usually in the form of DUI’s. It causes financial troubles, including loss of income and employment due to missed work, and family troubles, often resulting in divorce, loss of custody of children and domestic violence.

Despite these serious consequences, many people afflicted with this disease are unable to quit, despite wanting to desperately.

If you or a loved one is struggling with alcoholism, an alcohol rehab center can help. There are two basic types of rehab centers. Inpatient alcohol rehab centers, and outpatient alcohol rehab centers.

What Are Inpatient Alcohol Rehab Centers?

An inpatient treatment center, also called a residential treatment center, is a program that you stay at for a set period of time. Treatment length can vary. Some are as short as thirty days, or even shorter, and some are as long as 6 to 9 months. Thirty days is common.

For many people, the idea of a residential treatment program is overwhelming. This is understandable, but it is important to realize two things: For many people, it is the only thing that has worked, and in the big picture of things, it is a short period of time. Most people report having positive experiences at treatment centers. Aside from getting relief from their alcohol addiction, they often report coming away from their experience with increased self-esteem and self-awareness, and new tools for dealing with many common challenges in life, such as stress, depression and relationship and family problems.

Types Of Inpatient Alcohol Treatment Centers

There are different types of treatment centers to choose from. Some are based on 12-step models, some are run by church or other private organizations, and some are state or county run.

There are rehab centers geared specifically toward teen and young adult clients, and there are rehabs that are coed, male-only or female-only. Some rehabs even allow parents to have their young children or babies with them.

When choosing a rehab, it is important to take your individual needs into consideration so that you can increase your chances of success.

What Happens At An Inpatient Treatment Center?

If the idea of entering a residential treatment center seems intimidating, you are not alone. Many people are unsure of what happens in treatment centers, and worry about whether or not they will be able to complete a program.

You may have heard negative stories about rehabs, or you may have been exposed to some misconceptions.

Inpatient alcohol rehab centers are supportive, safe environments that allow you to focus on yourself and your health, and learn coping skills that can help you stay sober. In rehab, you will learn more about your addiction and what underlying triggers and situations have contributed to it.

After being accepted into the program and following intake procedures, the client is assigned a room. Sometimes people worry that they won’t be able to wear their own clothes or have their own toiletries, but this is rarely the case, and if it is, you would be informed before entering the treatment center.

Before committing to a treatment facility, you are encouraged to ask questions about rules, recovery philosophy and methods of treatment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What Happens In Treatment Centers?

Much of the time spent in treatment centers is structured. Clients are assigned a counselor or caseworker, and will spend time each week or each day checking in with them. This person will serve as a support person, and will give the client feedback about their progress in the program.

Some rehabs offer therapy and one-on-one counseling. In addition to this counseling, time will be spent in groups. Group counseling sessions are considered to be one of the most effective tools in treatment. Although generally facilitated by a staff member, most of the content of the session is simply members of the group discussing issues, sharing experiences and exchanging ideas and support. Often these groups are centered around a specific topic, such as relapse prevention, triggers, family relations, parenting, and coping skills.

There are also educational services in rehabs. Typically, you will spend some of your time learning more about the mechanisms of alcoholism and how it affects your body and your brain.

Depending on the treatment modality used in your rehab, you may or may not attend 12-step meetings. This is something you will generally find out during the interview and selection process.

What Other Rehab Options Are Available?

There are times when a residential treatment center isn’t a viable option. For example, if you are currently employed or you have family members to take care of. In these cases, you may want to consider outpatient alcohol rehab centers as an option.

An outpatient rehab provides many of the same services as inpatient treatment centers. Like inpatient centers, they vary in length of program. They also can have various hours. Many are daily, and some programs are full-time. Some programs may have part-time or evening hours for those who have day jobs. Some programs provide childcare.

Time spent in outpatient alcohol rehab centers will usually include one-on-one time with your assigned counselor or caseworker, group classes on a variety of topics, classes and other activities. Regular drug testing may or may not be a part of the program. This usually tends to be the case if the program is court-ordered.

Depending on the treatment modality, you may be encouraged to attend 12-step meetings in addition to your outpatient classes and groups. These are all questions you will want to ask during your selection process.

No matter which alcohol rehab center you choose, your chances of success are high if you follow and complete the program.

Aftercare

Many outpatient and inpatient treatment centers offer aftercare for a period of time. This is simply additional supportive services to help you succeed in your recovery. There may be groups or counseling sessions available for up to a year after leaving treatment.
