Alta Mira Review
Alta Mira, a luxe recovery facility that specializes in dual diagnosis, is located in a former glamorous hotel overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Its personal mission includes helping to foster “inspiration, hope, and freedom” and it seems to be making great strides in that.
Accommodations and Food
Alta Mira also strives to make the experience as pleasant as possible. Residents are allowed to bring their pets and have the option of choosing either their own private room or sharing a double room with a roommate. The secluded grounds complete with a state of the art gym and views of the Golden Gate Bridge round out the residential setting.
The food here is top notch. Residents eat buffet-style as a community three times a day. There is always a full salad bar available at lunch and dinner as well as healthy options for snacking around the clock. The cooking staff takes nutritional requirements and allergens into account for each and every client. Former clients rave about the cuisine, which isn’t surprising since gourmet chefs cooking with fresh, local ingredients are the ones behind the stove.
Treatment and Staff
Incorporating four core varieties of treatment—biological, psychological, social and spiritual—Alta Mira treats the “whole person,” not just the addiction. Offering custom treatment plans and following a “proprietary clinical model,” Alta Mira offers extras many other rehabs don’t, including having former residents engage with clients in weekly two-hour alumni processing group to discuss sobriety, recovery issues and life in general.
Alta Mira prides itself on its exceptionally qualified and well-trained staff. All told, they have more than 200 years of experience in treating addiction. They have a 24-hour medically supervised detox program, plus on-site detox specialists who are ready and eager to help struggling patients whenever needed. All the rehab’s therapists are licensed Master’s and Doctoral-level.
Extras
In addition to holistic counseling, traditional therapy, and 12-step oriented approaches, the center offers slightly more offbeat treatments. This includes neuropsychological counseling, neurofeedback, the “brain healthy” model, spiritual workshops—and even Native American ritual work.
Alta Mira also believes in experiential treatment like kayaking on the San Francisco Bay, indoor rock-climbing, horseback riding and exploring nearby Muir Woods’ majestic redwood trees. And it doesn’t end there. The center also offers yoga, massage, guided meditation, personal training, acupuncture and holistic nutrition counseling.
In Summary
One of the most appealing and unique factors at Alta Mira is its “lifetime of continuing care” practice. In short, it’s dedicated to continuing to help residents even after they’ve checked out and returned home. After successful completion of the program, grads have access to quarterly recovery tuneups, weekly relapse prevention groups, weekly process groups, family groups, annual events and activities, plus recovery resources. Those with resources who enjoy the Bay Area should find this well-rounded center with a vast variety of perks and amenities well worth investigating.
